Block crack
« on: February 27, 2017, 01:59:34 AM »
Some may have seen from the Members Projects section, I recently bought a complete SOHC engine that had been rebuilt, but not finished. The block used is a 1972 service replacement side oiler. I took the block to my local machine shop, as the decks were not quite square. I picked the block from them this morning, and started cleaning it when I got home. Almost straight away I noticed this:

It is at the front of the block on the LH deck. I cleaned all the paint and crap from the front of the block, and the crack doesn't appear to extend below the deck at the front. It looks like it may have been repaired there in the past. The area at the front of the block underneath where the crack is looks to have been ground or rough machined, it's not rough cast like the outside of a block normally is. Here is a picture of the front face of the block, just below where the crack is.

I'm a bit annoyed that either the machine shop owner didn't notice the crack, or neglected to tell me about it. Before I load the block back into my car and take it back, I wanted to ask whether this sort of crack should be repaired, or due to it's location at the front of the block and away from any high stress areas, it would be okay to live with it? I'm not aiming for huge power from this engine, maybe about 500-550hp. I would prefer to keep all the rare factory SOHC parts in good condition.

After looking at the pic of the front of the block, I went back and checked again with a bright light and a magnifying glass. It looks like it has been welded at the front of the block, but not the decks. Maybe that small piece was broken off at some stage. If that was the case, I'm not sure why the repairer would not have welded the deck face also.

I looked down into the water jacket area behind where the crack is, and it all looks normal and intact. Maybe this will be okay to use as is? What are your expert opinions on this?

I would take it back and get the machinist to look it over and mag it. The deck in the first picture looks like its either dirt or small pinholes in it. The second picture at 3 o`clock looks to be a hole at the end of the grinding/sanding area. I would diffinently get it checked.

Bummer Todd. The water jacket needs to at least be pressure tested. And maybe your machinist already checked it out and didn't bother to call you? Welding at this point means another dusting of the deck and torque plate hone in #5. Hopefully the pressure test proves the crack doesn't leak so you can build it as is.

I don't think I would be too excited about that because it's so far out near the edge.  I would guess someone dropped a head etc. on the edge it at some point and broke the piece off.  A pressure test would not be a bad idea, or possibly even clean and dry everything off well, then fill the crack with Kroil and see if it comes out anywhere.

Just looking at the pictures I would not hesitate to run that block, especially at the power levels you are talking about.

Been a while since I've posted on here...kinda tangled up...

FWIW - My opinion is like Jay's - - brake cleaner, air hose, JB Weld, razor blade, run it...
