« on: March 08, 2016, 08:17:07 PM »
i have long tube headers connected to cast iron 428 cj heads.my headers has 16 bolt holes, both patterns.and the heads have 16 holes, both patterns.question is,to get a good seal,do i need to use either top and bottom pattern, side to side pattern,or try to get all 16 in.and what is the best gaskets to use and to use sealer or not.

I like Remflex exhaust gaskets.  They are the crush kind, and so far, I haven't had a leak.  I have Cobra Jet heads, but use the 8 bolt pattern.  I added a hole for the dipstick tube.  http://catalog.remflex.com/

About 15 years ago, my daily driver was a 70 Cougar that had a mild 460. A 460 in a 70 Cougar has limited access to header bolts and changing gaskets. Two sets of the foil backed paper gaskets from the local auto parts store had blown out. I decided to try these Percy's Seal-4-Good gaskets. They really work well. I drove the 70 Cougar daily for another 5 years. Now it gets driven occasionally. It still has the same gaskets on it from 15 years ago and they don't leak! I put these on everything. Whether it has manifolds or headers.

Hopefully this is the bolt pattern you need:

I think you will like them.  I spoke with them on the phone, and they recommended I use the 8 hole gasket even though I have 16 bolt Cobra Jet heads.  Make sure you order based on the port opening size, and not just the bolt pattern.  I ended up with 390 GT gaskets the 1st time I ordered, and the port size on the gasket didn't match.

Lars, specifically what type of silicone do you use?  Were the heads and manifolds surfaced before silicone was applied?

Thanks,
Bruce

Most times i have used the ordinary orange Form-A-Gasket
sometimes the transparet stuff for aquariums
First time i used it was convinced i had to take it apart when
i got a gasket but held up for years until i swaped Engine
Most of the times i have just gave the manifold and heads
a good scrape down
I still have a hard time believing it my self. But worked
every time even where gaskets dont work

I do the same thing, Surface the flange flat, Orange hi-temp silicone and as many of the 16 bolts as i can get in
A good header with a thick flange really helps
