Aftermarket carb base on a Cobra Jet carb
« on: January 15, 2016, 02:32:46 PM »
Have any of you tried replacing the carb base on a 735 cfm carb with something like this?  It would allow use of a standard 3/8 PCV line to the back of the carb, and also provide a place to plug a vacuum gauge on the carb for idle mixture adjustments.   There are several companies that make replacement bases, including Holley.  I'm just think this would eliminate the need for a spacer with a PCV port, and make tuning with a vacuum gauge easier.  Thoughts?

That particular base is for a mechanical secondary carb ( double pumper ). You would need one for a vacuum secondary carb for a factory 735 CJ Holley. To answer your question, no I've never tried one.

Here's the vacuum secondary one.  I think Quick Fuel and maybe some others make similar bases.

That may be the correct part number, but just FYI it's the wrong photo, that is still a mechanical secondary base plate pictured. The written description seems to be incorrect also since they list a mechanical secondary link. All that aside, I would guess it will function fine, but I would guess Proform uses the same 3310 GM style throttle arm pictured on both base plates and not the Ford style arm a factory 735 cfm carb has. It also probably doesn't come with the Ford kickdown lever. Depending on which vehicle you have your throttle linkage may or may not directly hook up.
