WANTED: Junk Toploader case & tail housing
« on: December 14, 2015, 12:50:29 PM »
Anyone have any real cheap Toploader cases and tail housing (short)? I'm looking for broken pieces for a few bucks. Gotta mock up the FE block/trans in my '64 Comet project. I'll be cutting, grinding & welding with spatter getting on it. So I need something just to occupy the proper space. The closer to PA 17517 the better. Don't want to pay any high shipping fees. fairlaniac@fairlanet.com
Thanks!

Try finding one of the 70's overdrive cases and tailshafts.  There is a guy (Gloveman) who has a lot if this stuff and advertises on CL and Ebay classifieds in and around Akron Ohio.

I wondered about them. Are they dimensionally the same?

Thanks,

Externally they have the same dimensions.  The case has only four bolt holes that mount to the bellhousing instead of the eight bolt holes on the toploader - but these four bolt holes are the ones you would use for the later 65 and up toploader anyway.  The tailshaft has different mounting holes for the shifter on the overdrive unit.  I am not positive about the location of the trans mount on the tailshaft but think it is the same for between the toploader and OD unit.

Currently have a long tail shaft toploader in place of a 70's shorter tail overdrive, trans mount location is the same.  The overdrive tail shaft does position the shifter further back, but for your purposes sounds like that doesn't matter.

even a mustang 3 speed should work for what you need to do,   bolts right on, mounts in the same place and overall length is the same

Thanks! I had also wondered about the 3 speed. I see them everywhere between $50-$300. So the case is the same length. This is a curious question. I'll use a '66 Fairlane for reference. Is the tailhousing casting the same on a 3 speed and on a 4 speed? I think my Toploader tailhousing on my Fairlane is C60R-XXXXX? I'm at work and using my memory :-( Is it the same on a 3 speed just different shaft bore?

thanks,

There are three tail housing lengths.
14", 15 1/2" and 17".
All the cases are the same length 10".
So you can find a 24", 25 1/2" and 27" trans.
You can find all three lengths on 3 and 4 speeds.
Just depends on the car it was originally installed in.
Then you got shifter location.  ::)

Another thing to keep in mind.
A Jerico long tail is 24 1/2".  ;)
