best intake for a 390 cruiser with 2500 stall, 2.75 gears
« on: April 10, 2015, 10:02:13 PM »
Hello all,

When i first bought my 67 Ranchero about 18 months ago, my plans were to put my Dart 347 and TKO 500 into it. After selling all remaining parts from my mustang to fund the swap and gear change I ended up putting about 4000 miles on my Ranchero and loved driving it. It currently has a 390 2V, C6, 2500 stall, 2.75 gears. I would like to run the eddy heads, with FPA tri-y headers and the stock cam for now because i may run a gear vendors unit and dont want to swap cams multiple time in the FE.

So here is the criteria, cruise at 75 mph at 2500 rpms, dont care if it ever spins past 5000 rpms. Just looking for as much tourqe in the 2000-4000 range and wouldnt mind another 50 - 75 horse ove this completely stock motor.

I was going to use the 390 performer, but had read conflicting info on this topic.

Thanks for the input,

Bob

I would suggest a Performer RPM rather than the Performer intake, along with a good Holley carb. It's a great all around intake and works well with the Edelbrock heads.  The Performer 390 is not a good match for the Edelbrock heads, in my opinion.

You might also consider a swap to 3.25 gears, which are still highway friendly but will give you better acceleration than the 2.75s.

I had read that the RPM matched up better with those heads. I have a quick fuel 750 from my 347 that i think would work well. I actually had the 2.75s put in just to be able to cruise at 75 and keep it tp 2500.  When i get the GV unit i would bump the gears to 3.70s

Sounds like a good plan to me, I really like the GVOD units.

If you are staying with the stock 2V cam which is pretty small even for a small FE cam
the RPM and Edelbrock heads may give you a soft/flat low rpm feel.
One of the reasons you are enjoy the giddy up of the 390 as it now is the low rpm
feel of the well matched heads, intake and 2V.
It keeps the air speed up at the low rpm range.
The much bigger air ways of the Ed stuff and very small cam will slow the air speed at low rpm and give a soft/flat feel.
The 390 intake with the C7 heads and the pipes will give you a much better feel at low speed. jmho
Then again if you just want all the bling then hell ya,  giddy up!

I anticipared some compromise till the gear and cam swap happen. Im not chasing power with this build, 20 years of fox body mustangs and Ive had my fill. My 347 was around 420 rwhp and would spin 7500 all day, but even after about 25000 miles on that motor all I ever did was beat the snot out of it. The wife and I really like the way the ranchero cruises, and with the GT interior with the bucket seats and floor console its like my recliner with wheels.

Im finishing up the floor pans now but this is what it looks like.
