tulip vs nail head..
« on: January 24, 2015, 03:38:12 PM »
I could use some insight on the valves..My reading and talking to people has the nail head valve superior to the tulip..
My question is as I have a mild 427 with edelbrock heads,270S cam and Jays intake adaptor do I need to be concerned about the loss of flow from a tulip..The low lift might actually make it worse tho...
I have a set of intake valves but they look tulip to me..I don't mind buying something different...Does the tulip/nail head thing include the exhaust valves to..

I was going to put 2.19 and 1.73 valves in the heads but that is not set in stone...At this point I just have a set of 2.19 intakes here.
My car is a road car.It will never see the 1/4 mile track

Are you going to use a 45* seat and valve face?  If so, the tulip will work fine.  Just make sure the springs match the weight of the valve and the camshaft lift.  The 30# seats work well with the nail head, so if you have the tulip valves already, then just change the valve job to a multi-angle and call it done.  Joe-JDC

Thank-you...That's what I wanted to know...I haven't got any springs or exhaust valves yet...Cory

Some Data here. I would call your valve a nailhead with what looks like a 45* face.

He's using Edelbrock heads, not TP heads, or SOHC heads.  I have seen the tulips improve flow starting at .400" lift over the nail heads, in many Edelbrock applications.  I have been installing 2.150" or larger intake valves made by Ferrea or REV or SI since the early 90's, and the 45* angle or greater always increases flow above .400" lifts.  I have taken a set of 390 C6-R heads and cut the seats for 25*, 30*, 35*, 45* 50*, and done multi-angle valve jobs for these angles, and flowed each to compare where the flow increases or changed.  The nail-head with 30* is superior at lower lifts, but quickly loses to the small tulip or tulip valve above ~.350-.400" lifts.  I stand by my answer, that valve will work fine with the 45* seat in the Edelbrock head.  Joe-JDC

Not disputing your work Joe.
Just throwing out some data from the bank.
This is a set of valves I have in the junk pile and will fit an Ed head.
A little more nailheadish on the intake and the exh is the classic tulip shape. both valves have a 45* face.
Cory's intake is a very shallow tulip shape but I still think more nailhead than tulip.
I completely agree that his valve will work fine in his ED's.
