need help with cam selection
« on: January 28, 2015, 08:36:30 PM »
Car is a 1967 Galaxie 500 2 door fastback.
C6 trans 2000 stall converter.
Tire size and gearing to have cruise rpm about 2500@55mph, 3000@70mph.
Engine 390 4.05 bore, stock stroke, 9.5 CR,
C4AE-G heads (no port work),
RPM intake, fpa headers, 2.5 exhaust.
hinking hydraulic roller, but not set in stone.
Lumpy idle not a bad thing (no power brakes)

I would make sure your calculated compression is exactly right, because you are right on the edge of being able to run a little more cam.

Often 390s are deeper in the hole and have slightly larger chambers than you'd expect and you end up with lower compression.

That being said, sounds like a heavy 3.50 geared car with a little converter.  I'd be looking at something around  218-224 degrees at .050.

Comp has an Xtreme Energy grind that would work well, but could be a little noisy. Comp has some quieter lobes too though

A similar cam could also be ground on 108 centers if you wanted the idle to sound a bit more rowdy, and it would bring torque up a bit

If there is any way to get the heads ported along with the cam, even if it is even just a modern valve job with some bowl work and blueprint all the chambers, I think you'd see more gain
