My new oil pressure
« on: January 26, 2012, 04:11:11 PM »
I changed my oil pump from the factory Ford pump to a Melling M57HV with straight 30w and went from 45 lbs max spun with a drill to 65 lbs max spun with a drill.
I can tell the drill is working harder and it even got a bit warm where as it did not do that with the standard pump.
After I start the engine and let it run a bit, I will change the oil to Valvoline Racing 10w30.

Now since my oil gauge is inside the car I had to put my camera on timer, spin the oil pump, take the picture of the gauge and see what is says!  :D ;D :D

I got the engine running again today. Boy it runs a lot better, but that's a different story.

Today with hot oil and running the same 30w as I did before with the standard pump it made:

Idle 32 lbs hot  8)
2200 rpm's 75 lbs hot  :)
and if you rev it, its will goes to almost 85 lbs  :o

The idle pressure is right where I want it, I am a bit surprised at the higher rpm pressure.
I dumped the oil tonight and I will put Valvoline Racing 10w30 and see what it does.

Bet it drops approx. 10% (cold to hot) with the 10w-30 over the straight 30W oil.

Today I put in the 10w30. Oil pressure readings were about the same.
Idle 30 to 35 lbs hot in park
2200 rpm's 70 lbs hot, so that's 5 lbs less
and I had a friend watch the gauge when I went through the gears, he said it went to 90.

I rechecked that I have the high volume pump not the high pressure.
I must have fairly tight bearing clearances, but I thought these HV pumps should bypass at 65 lbs.

The vent pressure is rated at 65 psi at about 2000 rpm.
As the rpm increases so will the psi. The pump is still venting you are just pumping
past the vent.
You are also measuring the out put almost at the pump outlet.
You will have pressure drops all along the oil passages to the back of the crank
which may be up to 20 psi lower than what you see on the gauge. (in looser engines)
Bearings like oil, its when they are not getting a good supply they go south.
You have good oil pressure be happy. ;D

Also from my experimenting there is a 15-30 psi loss from front to rear of the block , so your pressure are perfect in my book

A good insurance policy is to run a good oil pump driveshaft because, as you pointed out, it takes a bit more to drive a HV pump.
