GASSER WARS by Larry Davis

Awesome book and interesting recap of history. The wars started in 55 and ended in 68 with the advent of Funny Cars, Pro/Stocks and guys going Match Racing.  ( imagine going to a race track to see the two featured racers/cars run) Details individual races and hero's. The SOHC was the last motor into the Gasser mix and was the preferred bullet in the chamber of the big Dogs laying waste to the Hemi's. In the early days they ran Cadillac's and Olds motors. There was a blown flat head with aftermarket OHV heads that won its class in a National Event.   They showed one unfortunate racer that rolled his Anglia in the traps, after being in a comma for a few days he survived w/broken limbs etc but was said to have never raced again - the author praised NHRAs safety rules for saving him but the guy was essentially sitting on a 1930's imported economy car chassis with a hoop and a brace for a cage and the glass shell was torn off. Amazing color pictures including Bill Coon's 2x4V SOHC T-bird.
Lot of really amusing ads for Cams and Transmission mfgs including the auto you rev'd in neutral and dropped into Drive!

Good luck getting past the entry fee.

I recall as a kid in the early 70s there were a few Ford Econoline pickups and some old 1940s and 50s cars still running at the local track in NJ. But really it was before my time.
