thinling about doing DIS ignition.
« on: October 30, 2014, 08:21:56 PM »
Further ignition thoughts for my FE got me thinking of using a  coil on plug DIS system on my 445. I am thinking I could  use my modified distributor for a cam sensor and use a crank trigger for a crank position sensor. I could then use a 4.6 PCM to make make stuff happen or a modified SN95 PCM?  The original SN95 is capable of waste spark 4 channel ignition but it really is not what I am after. I wonder if I could modify the camshaft sensor and trigger from the 4.6 to work with the FE arrangement, then fabricate support tubes to mount the coils to the head. I guess it would be fairly easy to just use the waist spark system but the coils and wires are still kinda backward engineering.

For what it's worth i've seen so many DIS systems converted back to a regular distributor, often with some tough changes (belt driven off cam or crank) to wonder if there is some major disadvantage with the extra complications of DIS. I am fairly sure coils mounted to a source of heat is one problem.

I am thinking of going that way to gain clearance  for my intake and also I have been waiting for a machinist to make a shaft for my distributor for months and he seems not too enthusiastic about the project. I am considering a possable work around at this point. The waste spark system is a doable prospect and the remote mounted coil pack could be mounted in an isolated area. I had a Mountaineer with DIS and never had an issue other than wires and plugs once in 100,000 miles. I never considered the heat issue with a coil on plug deal though, I could see that being a problem with headers and such.
