66 Galaxie C6 Shifter
« on: October 15, 2014, 04:09:25 PM »
I am still looking for an OEM floor shifter for my 66 Galaxie w/c6, but I have been wondering if anyone has ever successfully used an aftermarket shifter in an original console--without modification to the console.

Some shifters look like they may work, such as a Hurst Promatic II, but I suspect some of the shifter's mechanisms will not fit inside the factory console. I want to retain as much of an original appearance as possible.

Does anyone have any experience with this and/or suggestions??

Thanks

I have a '66 7 liter Galaxie with C6 and console. It's been almost 20 years since I had it apart and rebuilt the shifter so the memory may be a little faulty, but I don't think it's a lot different than a Mustang shifter, which are common as dirt. Mind you, it's not the same, but similar. The bushing was the same I remember. The Galaxie uses a longer rod to the arm on the C6 with a different shape than a Mustang, but something that could be fabbed. The trick is getting all the parts working together so the gear positions match up. The arm on a floor shift Galaxie C6 is the same as a '67-'70 Mustang with C6, so the detents on the shifter must be close . You might want to investigate adapting the Mustang shifter. The only good aftermarket floor shifters for Fords I've ever seen are the Turbo Action/Cheetah - Winters ones and they won't fit in the console. But that's with drag racing in mind, if you're only cruising and need it to just put the car in gear something else might be fine.

I appreciate the information. I had wondered if other Ford shifters might work, particularly the 68-71 Torino/Cyclone/Montego shifters, since they have a gear indicator lens that attaches to the shifter as do the Galaxie shifter. Also, the shifter assembly looks similar to the Galaxie.

I have a set of Ford dealer parts books, so I guess I should start digging into them, looking for possible similarities between models and shifters.

Thanks for the heads up
