You need the ring, good chance you could crack the flexplate without it. The same ring was also used on MEL motors ( 430/462 ) and early 429/460's so they are not too hard to find. They are obsolete at Ford so you can't order a new one, but if you have a dealer nearby you could check, they may have one on hand because they came in a package with multiples. Part number is B9AZ-6A366-B. Also when assembling your motor check the length of your flexplate bolts - if too long they can extend past the crankshaft flange and hit the block.
