I saw an article recently on the engine, very nasty indeed. Twice the power in the same displacement, almost cheating LOL.

I work/live between two 16-645 EMD 2 strokes with three 6-71's singing.
2 stroke power all the way.
If I may say, 500 miles offshore with 4 of those massive blowers singing is a special thing.

emissions. I'd much rather see that SOB loaded rather then running w/o a load. It looks like it's running 12:1. Gas:Oil. Odd a few months back I was 100+ feet away downwind of a No-Wake Zone Evinrude and I could strongly smell the burning oil. Always thought about 2cyl's dumping/extracting exhaust through prop hub and blending it with the enclosing water. Logic says oil in gas submerged in water will coalesce into the water. Just thinking with the average guy using a Qt or two for a days boating is it any wonder I get a greasy oil film on my boats water line each time I drop it into water for a day's play? When you think about thousands of 2stroke motors in boats just how much of the oil makes it clear of the water?

an oil mist/vapor recovery system for EMDs . I sold him a cylindrical wire cloth mist collector element for about five years. You ever heard of seen one?

We have recovery cans in the back of the engine BB, back by the blowers.
Crankcase explosions are a real fear here.... we don't just vent to the stack like we used to.
These engines don't burn much oil, bout 7 gallons each per day under full power.
