New Intake FE Designs
« on: June 26, 2014, 09:40:47 PM »
Would like to see a revised version of the Offenhauser Dual Port crossed with the SP2P. Even plastic. Somthing for the daily driver The theory is sound but the single plane design and primaries in the floor is what doesnt make sense. Enginers were limited by technology, they wernt stupid. Maybe Jay will get bored and invest a few hundred hours and make one for the few daily drivers left?

My FE will be a daily driver but I am completely insane LOL. The plastic intake has big issues, the GM and Ford ones warped  to no end and still do. I sure changed a lot of them over the years. Dorman makes a killing on replacements.

Yeah they do. At first Ford only offered the same intake for $530+/- with the same plastic coolant cross over.

What would you do about the exhaust crossover with a plastic FE intake?

SP2P and Dual Port are both terrible even for a daily driver. Really if you want to dump that much power just for gas mileage consider swapping to a smaller engine.

That is why I do not like the idea of plastic intakes as the heat just kills them. Untill another material can be come up with that would be more heat resistant to warping and deteriorating I would rather stay with aluminum myself. Why mess with a good thing.

I thought of plastic due to engine room. I don't claim to be an engineer but figured someone with the talent could make a block off plate and maybe the plastic would not get too hot and warp. As far as the terrible designs I know a couple members who were big on Ford and FE in the 70's and 80's who used these intakes on there tow trucks. The Edelbrock design was better at consistent 19 mpg but did limit engine to about 4500. Don't remember gear ratio but no overdrive was used. I do have the SP2P but have not used it yet. I have my reasons for engine choice, may build a 390 with 2v pistons, D2 heats and SP2P for a daily driven pickup or 4 dr Galaxie. I have many ideas and little cash these days.

For the Oldsmobile build I am doing for a friend we went with a performer intake, it came with cast iron inserts for the heads to block the intake crossover should you desire not to use it. We are using a Holley with electric choke so the riser I am not going to need. I haven't  installed them yet, I am thinking JB. Weld should do the job. I would imagine if you were to cast a plaster mold of your head crossover and make an insert out of steel you could duplicate the same process.

Yeah....cost, weight savings, smooth as silk runners, cooler intake charge, 2-parts for removal w/o pulling the ditzy, more hp!

Can't imagine the benefits though.....LOL!

AFR Small Block Chevy Titon 2-Piece Composite Intake Manifolds

Product images may differ from actual product appearance.

Composite Plastic 2-Piece Intake Manifold Offers Convenience

AFR developed a patented process and design for a 2-piece composite plastic intake manifold that reduces weight and increases power. These manifolds run up to 30° cooler than an aluminum manifold and weigh 9 to 11 pounds less (varies by model). The 2-piece design allows center runners to be removed without touching the distributor or losing coolant.
Features •Cast-in nitrous bosses
•Dual distributor hold-downs
•Intake bolt compression limiters
•Carburetor vibration reduced 5%
•Modular design with interchangeable runners
•15+ horsepower and torque (more than competing units)
•30° cooler and 9-11 pounds lighter than aluminum manifolds
•Includes distributor bolts and 12-point intake bolts and washers
•Viton rubber gaskets and O-ring distributor seal for leak-free operation

I just go off what I have seen from the OEM intakes, as far as those go they do not work out so well in the long run. Of course a quality aftermarket part is always an improvement over the OEM quality in most cases. I have done an awful lot of intake replacement jobs on OEM intakes and many other mechanics I know have also. GM I know did away with the all plastic intake on the 4.3 and went with just the upper, I never had an issue with those but the Buick V6 had big problems with them as does the 4.6 Ford and LS1. I suppose all things are perfected over time but I do not wrench on other peoples cars anymore so I am not sure how well the current parts hold up in a daily driven application?

Hey, I also had to replace the OEM plastic intake on a relative's  4.6L Grand Marquis where it spewed coolant from the horizontal front edge at a casting seam. Seems this was the weak spot on virtually all of these engines. Yet, the Dorman replacement solved the issue (cast aluminum passage while the rest is still plastic).

Point is, Ford's design was messed up yet the new intake solved the problem since I've never heard of a Dorman unit failing.  We will see more plastic parts I'm sure now that the engineers have seen the error of their ways.

Bob, I have had really good luck with Dorman Products! Never used their intakes but I have used other products with great success... JMHO
