Front wheels
« on: February 16, 2014, 02:07:34 PM »
Ok not a motor?? exactly but the motor weight has a effect on them. I wanna get new rims for the frt of my 54 with the FE. Asking the opinion of guys who have run this kinda stuff would it be better to get 15x 4.5 wide or 6inch rims. I`ve run the 4.5s on my Mavericks with sbf`s with a 165r-15 tire but there alot lighter car motor combo. Thanks

What are you doing with the car? Drags, street cruiser around town, highway road tripping?

Street cruiser that will go to the track few times a yr. I`m not worried bout cuttin tenths. If I did the 6 inch rims what size would you guys recommend? Like to def keep a skinny look up front.

185-70 15 i Think. Its about the same diameter as a
165 15
Or you can go 185 15 thats about one inch bigger
in dia.

I would run the narrower 4.5s.  I have old school BFG 7.35X14s on 14X6s and the wheels look a little wide for the tire IMO.  Still has the skinny look, but would be better with a narrower rim width.

Something else to consider is the load index. I just bought new front runners 2 weeks ago. I was telling my father in law that I was considering a lower profile tire because I get sloppy steering right now. He said be sure to get a higher load rating because the 59 ford with an FE motor has a heavy front end. I ended up getting load rating 91 tires and they helped a lot. Max air pressure is 51 pounds. I'm running them with about 38. Here's a chart for weight ratings.
