Just for fun...
« on: November 20, 2013, 05:42:58 PM »
Anyone have any idea what might be the all-time highest horsepower FE engine built?  Probably a blown cammer on nitro I suppose, but what kind of numbers would it have made on the dyno?  How about any wedge head builds?

My highest horsepower naturally aspirated wedge was 820ish
My highest horsepower naturally aspirated cammer was 870ish

I have supplied parts to a couple that have gone over 900 but not my finish work

There have only been a couple that have claimed n/a numbers over 1000....

Without a doubt, downstate Illinois based Bach & Gould's Shelby blocked supercharged nitro SOHC front engine nostalgia digger that raced until the late 90's. Will follow w/details.

B&G actually hit a low 6 (6.29?) IIRC  before they stopped racing the Cammer engined dragster. These times were better than ANY SOHC on fuel, mainly due to more blower, dual pumps, etc. that more modern teams utilize.

I don't know of any current Nitro Cammer engines, so just a guess that you would have to go back to the days of Jack Chrisman for the highest horsepower Cammer engines. My July 1966 Car Craft lists his Cyclone Roadster as 1200 hp. That's with a blown, nitro cammer. Pretty tame by todays standards, so there's a good possibility that that is NOT the highest. But considering he was using all stock Ford parts (block, crank, heads and I think rods...might be wrong on the rods) that's not to bad. It's also very possible that the magazine article is sandbagged by Jack just a fuzz so that he didn't give away his true power capability.  :)

By todays standards, this is the highest horsepower NA wedge head engine that I know of. A Kuntz and Company built, 527 making 1112 hp.

I think Craft may have some that make more, but they border on being an FE....with canted valves, billet heads and a host of other wild tricks that kind of take it beyond being a pure FE....at least in my book.

I'm sure there are probably some blown engines that make more, especially if the boost is upped or they are NOS sprayed. I think I've seen at least a couple, but can't remember where or who. Maybe somebody else knows?

I'm not sure how or if you can embed a YouTube video here, so here's the link if it won't....

Well I would certainly guess that that beats Jacks old engines :o
No horsepower rating, but I'd guess that thing has to be closer to 2000 hp....if not more!

I think Bach & Gould claimed 3000 HP out of their engine.  My 585" naturally aspirated SOHC made 960 HP on the dyno after the switch from the distributor to the distributorless setup; link to the dyno chart is here:

http://www.fepower.net/dyno_results.html

My 489" supercharged medium riser FE made 1030 HP on the dyno just on the blower, and a little over 1200 HP with a 175 HP nitrous shot.  Best I've been able to get out of a wedge head FE naturally aspirated was 855 from my 530" high riser.

I'm hoping that my big SOHC, after being fitted with a dry sump and new cams, will peak over 1000 HP naturally aspirated on pump premium fuel.  Reaching 1000 HP on pump gas has been a long time goal of mine.  Should have the engine on the dyno in the next few months...
