Older Napa Ignition module
« on: December 07, 2023, 06:09:26 PM »
I have two FE distributors with NAPA pointless conversion setups installed.  It has been so long since in used them I do not recall what electronic modules work with them.  I used them with MSD boxes back in the day but I also used them with the NAPA module and some Ford modules.

Does anyone recall using these?

Unless someone knows what type of pickup they use, the only way to tell would be with an oscilloscope.  A Hall effect sensor (and optical sensors) use a square wave that is stable with RPM.  A very low voltage that has to be amplified in a module to act as a switch.  A magnetic pickup's signal is a sine wave that rises to peak, then falls through a neutral, and to a bottom then rises again.  The magnetic pickup's signal doesn't need amplification and gets stronger with RPM.  An MSD will run with both types of pickup as well as a simple switch, like points.  Outside of that, the module has to be able to read that type of signal.  Most OEM modules read magnetic pickups but not Hall effect or points.

Post a picture, I'd guess it's some form or pertronix or unilite, those are the ones I remember being rebranded for parts houses.....
