Sealed Power Bearings all over the place?
« on: April 02, 2023, 06:50:23 PM »
So I'm installing new bearings while the engine is apart. The other day I had a post mentioning the size of the Sealed Power 2.200" journal rod bearings. I was at .003-.0032" with my STD set. So on advice I got some .001 bearings with the intent to use the lower shell. Upon installation of the STD upper and the .001 lower I was measured at .0032. The same as I was with both STD shells. So I put the .001 upper in with the .001 lower and have .0035". With .001 undersize, I am now over the STD set. Did to rods and the second set has similar results.

Can someone advise me a better set of bearings and sizes to obtain a .0022-.0025 range of bearings? The crank journal is 2.1995".

I did have clevite STD upper and .001 lower to obtain the clearance in the engine. Would I be safe ordering those?  CB743HN. How consistent are they?

FYI - I have a new set of Sealed Power STD bearings on hand and thought I'd try to use them. In theory a set of .001 bearings and using the lower would get me about a .0003-.0005" tighter clearance. That theory didn't work. :(

What is the rod journal bore size?
Resize rod to tighten up clearance is sometimes done.

Clevite or ACL…you are seeing what I have been seeing, the Clevite 743HN is night and day more consistent as are the ACLs

FYI - Been busy measuring and fitting rod bearings the past few days.

On Sunday I attended the Maple Grove Raceway Swap Meet. Stroke of luck, a vendor was selling a bunch of different BBC Clevite Rod Bearings. Some were full sets, some with a few missing. Some STD, .001, .010 and a few others. In there were:
(17) CB743HN Upper STD (all date codes 21)
(11) CB743HN Lower .001 (date codes 20 & 21)

So not very old. Got the lot for $100, a total of 53 total shells. Some had bore gauge witness marks. All got me in the .0024 - .0027 range. A lucky day for sure.
