Mustang Borgeson steering box
« on: March 13, 2022, 11:02:17 AM »
Posting this just so the information is out there . I wasnt able to find anything other  then a blurb on an obscure forum saying that the box will not work with a FE mustang.  A conversation with JBA yielded a little more info that they had indeed modified a set of their headers to go on a 390 mustang some years back but didnt pursue making it a thing.
This Box has a good ratio and its a power box so it removes all of that nastyness from under the car . You simply use all manual steering parts to get it hooked up . I am using an electric Ford/Volvo power steering pump on it and although the car hasnt been driven yet it steers pretty easy sitting here on an epoxy floor with most of the weight on it.
As for the exhaust....... Well I looked at how many sets exit that port and I dont believe there is a set out there production wise that will bolt on. Ive never had any stock CJ manifolds but I highly doubt that will work as well given what you can see here in this pic.
Will have to put some time into this tube as well as mill this 3/8 flange a bit but I think its doable . You can slide the engine back some if you have the adjustable engine mounts but if you do with power brakes that ends the possibility of you using very tall valve covers. I have a set of Jays covers on there now and I can maybe go back 1/4" .
I may end up removing the box and milling as much material off that boss as I can as well as the 1/4" scoot...
In short , the box will go and it will work. But not without some pains... Personally I cannot stand the factory power steering setup or the ratios that come with it so I guess its worth it...

Thanks for doing this.

I have not hated my factory PS, it's been leak fee and works well since 1996 or so (jinx) however, I'd sure like to have something better.

I am not a fan of the standard M2 front ends as it makes it a bit more difficult for drainback and puts the pan very close to the crank.

However, If that rear tube could fit, what a nice setup that would be. Will be following your work

Yeah the stock stuff clearly works , but what a mess !! I mean look at all that is involved in that deal under there . Dont get me started on the M2 stuff out there... I have installed plenty of them over the years but I wouldnt put them in a serious car . They limit travel horribly and then there is everything else that comes with that setup . Yeah I know that a ton of guys run limiters anyway but thats never been my thing. I want the front end to cycle unhindered , or atleast as much as possible , struts give you the best result...Me working with an original R code in this instance I am doing what I can get to get everything I want and stay in the box and not cut the sides out of it if you know what I mean . Before anyone goes jumping on me  , I get it.... Its a cheap solution to an issue and I know plenty of guys get them to work  . I get all of why people do it... Its just not my thing for a bunch of reasons , travel being at the top of the list.
Here is a shot of the stub out before I start the leg down and it blocks the shot . and one of the bottom side . I am going to die grind a bit off that bolt boss on the box and this should be fine even with some heat wrap on it. NO , they arent going to end up exactly equal in length , but they arent horrible either.

Very clean...equal length is overrated anyway, no two intake ports or exhaust runners ever end up exact, and in theory, differing peaks may bring down the absolute HP but could widen the curve too.

Nice work and clean car.  Do you have any issues with some filters not clearing on that filter adapter?  I had a 496 in here that we had to mill the surface facing the filter, would fit some filters, but not others depending on the crimp size

Thanks . Im trying to bridge the gap between race car and fun to drive street car without crippling it so I can take it on some drag and drive events . As you know thats a tough space to operate in and do well in either direction. I will put together a thing for the projects section once this all get done but heres a couple of other shots. I am fairly certain I am the only R code 70 in the world with a late model Mustang 3 link grafted into it. This system (And some of the parts) is what you find in the 2012 CJ .
I did the Watts simply because you cant beat it in either arena for rear stability...

Blueoval when you get your wheel alinement if you can get 4 dec caster that will make it drive nice i have a box just like yours in my fairlane and cause my car was pretty low i was limited with caster angle at first due to the 15x8.5 3.750 back space with a 225 50 tire coming close to hitting the bottom of the front guard the car was alittle to responsive at highway speeds since then i fixed that went to 4 deg caster and it drives great

I have the Borgeson box in my 68 Mustang.
Edlebrock heads.
Hooker 6114’s fit with the forward bolt head ground at an angle. I do have Ron Morris adjustable mounts. 7-8 tubes are split by the box.
I switched to FPA’s the engine had to be moved, via mounts, again 7-8 are split by the box.

I even made an extended ,then over the top ,modification to use mechanical clutch linkage.

I routed the hydraulics into and through the wheel well.

That is good to know !! If you get a chance could you snap some pics of that area on the 68 ? The hooker takes that drastic of a turn leaving the head to fit eh ? Hard to believe that the 1 3/4s make that much of a difference. I too used some existing holes to route the lines in from the wheel well leading up to the pump which mounts in the valance area.

I recently put Borgeson steering box in my '66 Galaxie. Going from a 6 turn lock-to-lock manual box to a 3.5 turn lock-to-lock power box made a huge difference.
