Take aways from RMRW 2020 2.0
« on: September 17, 2020, 10:15:57 PM »
Aside from the obvious, I had a really good time. I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the Mustang was on those long trips and with the 3.80 and Gear Vendor o/d I was able to cruise on the Turnpike 70 mph at 2700 rpm. The motor and driveline all stayed dry too, no leaks! I was able to weigh my car at Topeka and it weighs 3408 with pretty much a full tank of gas and me NOT in it. I didn't think it was going to weigh that much but it does. For some reason my r/p steering got REAL hard to turn. Something I'll need to address.
I wasn't sure if I'd like RMRW's event scheduling, racing in the afternoon/evening but I like it. It gives an option of leaving out that evening and driving at night or in the next morning. I chose to leave in the morning, drive to the track and race then head to the Motel. What I liked about that was I didn't feel as rushed as with DW and I could look over the drive route and plot it out on my lap top that night so I had a better idea of where I was going. On DW for me it was push, push to get to the Motel before dark. And you have a better opportunity to make multiple passes if you want. There were 225  entrants which was just a nice number. The check points weren't so congested and tech went by a lot faster. Met a lot of nice people and made some new friends.  8)

First, I hope the damage is minor to your engine. 2nd, I'm glad you had a good time. That's what it's all about afterall.
You bring up some interesting points about their afternoon racing program. I'm curious, did you book your hotel rooms before the event, or did you decide on your driving plan after starting? Seems like if you got in the lanes early enough, which you always do, that you could drive part of the way to the next venue before it even got dark, making the day drive pretty easy.

One thing I like about the morning racing is that the short drives to the track means the engine and compartment isn't heat soaked, so checking/changing plugs and pulling the exhaust isn't such a dangerous mission..lol But you do feel rushed to make it to the next hotel. And the morning rush to get in the lanes is always pretty hectic.

I booked my motels in advance. I had thought about driving part way after I made a pass but the down side(for me) would be if I get to my destination too soon I'll be stuck waiting around for the gates to open. But a two part drive would allow for an even more leisurely pace if you wanted. Another thing I liked about the way RMRW did things was they called you to the staging lanes by class so everyone pretty much raced another car from their class. This helped eliminate the free for all that Drag Week has. They did that for a couple of rounds then it was race for all class. I agree on having a hot car when you get to the track that is one downside. But again since they raced from 4 to 10 and you didn't drive that evening you weren't so rushed to get everything changed over real quick. I usually left the motel about 7 and was at the track between 2-3 and my class was one of the last called so I had plenty to get ready and still wonder around the pits. Having 225 cars instead of 375 helped a bunch too.

I didn't like that set-up at first, but after thinking about it, I agree with how you see it. I think it would actually be a bit more laid back and feeling less rushed. It gives you 2 options of how to do the event.
