1UB crankshaft
« on: December 07, 2019, 02:26:47 PM »
Finding mixed info on 1UB crankshafts. Have one that is std/std, stored for quite a while.
Question is,
Were they for 428 CJ or luck of the draw in standard engines or?
Thanks in advance,
LF

They aren’t exclusive to CJs, even found in industrial and irrigation applications, but they are correct for a CJ

1 U cranks were in 410, 428 starting in '66, '67, '68 before the CJ or SCJ.  Joe-JDC

I have never had a 428 industrial engine, but I have owned plenty of 428 CJ & non CJ car engines. Every real CJ I had had a 1UB crank, and although some say that some CJ version had a 1U, I have only ever found them in 66-69 big car (non CJ) engines.

I have a C scratch C8 428CJ with a 1U crankshaft.  It is a complete numbers matching engine.   When I tore it down for a refresh, I was wondering if it was legit, but everything was standard, with standard Ford bearings, etc.

Yep, I have a '68 CJ, dated 8C26 IIRC, that has a 1U crank, and I know the lineage of the engine back to the Cougar it was pulled out of in the wrecking yard around '74

Agree, but I will say, every single irrigation 428 I have had, never one without, 20+ over the years, was a 1UB, pistons with "SUPER" cast into the pin boss area, and  3/8 bolt -B rods.  I have never seen a 1U in a CJ though, despite it being documented everywhere on the internet

ON EDIT - Not discounting Gene's experience...just never saw one, makes sense it would be an early one

Since I have never owned a 68 428 CJ, I don`t know what cranks they may have had, mine were all 69 & 70 engines. And although not technically an industrial engine, the 428 I have in my 59, was a over the counter 428 CJ "service" short block. As Ross mentioned, it has a 1UB crank, and is still wearing is "428 Super" cast pistons, although the rods are the 13/32" C7AE versions, but unlike the CJ rods that were installed in production cars, that had the oddball 19/32" rod nuts, these rod bolts have 5/8" head nuts. I have had this engine for over 30 years ago, and when I tore it down a few years ago, I noticed the DAB bearings and block date codes were all from 1973. To be honest,I visually never noticed any difference between the 1U and 1UB cranks anyhow, (while the SCJ 1UA is easy to tell by the missing counterweight). The regular 1U cranks have never given me any issue during hundreds of low 10, and a few high 9 ET second passes in my Fairmont, dumping the clutch at over 6000 RPM.

Must be one of those high-nickel castings with an "X" somewhere.

The original engine in my April built 68.5 has a 1U crank.
