Stroking 428 CJ Crank
« on: September 18, 2012, 06:55:17 PM »
Ive been  piecing together a  428 to put in a 67 Mustang and have an iron 1UB CJ  crank that is at 10/10 under now.
I plan to have it internally balanced  and was wondering if at the same time ,it could be turned down to BBC journal size    AND   possibly offset ground to maybe 4.125 stroke?

You could do all that. You can also just buy one already done and it would probably be cheaper.
When you switch to the chev rod the big end is wider just over a .100" wider and you would have to hack out the 1UB to that or cut the rods.
Which kinda defeats the purpose of going to the chev rod. The wider bearing is better for long life.
That said the 1UB is a great crank and even at .020 under it will spin all day and make good power. A good set of rods on it and light pistons
it should balance out no prob.
Although the best way to go if going stroke is to use the 4.250 incher. More cubic inch means more power and it is a proven combo that is
very reasonably priced.

I agree

A turned 428 crank will bring 400, if you sell it and a new 4.125/4.25 SCAT is 550-600 from most suppliers.

That's only 200 bucks worth of machine work to play with

Thanks for the info guys.  It doesn't seem worth the effort, so I'll use it as is.
This is going to be a budget build using parts on hand, so the only major parts I need are rods and pistons.    I'm planning on using DSCs  prepped, polished and peened  390 rods and Speed Pro pistons  in a D2TE  391 block  with std 4.13 bore.
