Drag radials or street tires (drag week)
« on: August 07, 2018, 10:24:17 AM »
Do I take a chance and run drag radials all week or buy yet another pair of street tires for the Mustang? I built the rear of the car around the 295/55 DRs and the closest street tire I can find is a 275/60 which is the same height but about 2" narrower section width so I will have a big gap between the tire and the wheel well. But I guess that might not be a bad thing if I am going to be pulling a trailer. I am notoriously paranoid about such things too. Not sure how the car is going to react to drag radials either. I know a lot of guys run them. I do have an extra pair of 10" slots I could mount my 28x10 slicks from my Galaxie onto them or I have a pair of 28x9 slicks I originally bought for the Galaxie but I didn't like the thin sidewalls they had. Too many options and too little time!

I’ve seen dudes run REAL fast on MT pro bracket radials. They make 28x10 and 29.5x10.5

Alan, a skinnier street tire might be a benefit during Drag Week if you encounter a rainstorm. Less chance of hydroplaning. I would just consider them a Drag Week only tire, like my BF Goodrich tires that I use on my Mach. Since they're going to see very limited use, maybe just buy a cheap set?

I'm at a loss for what to do with my Galaxie. I don't want to buy drag tires for a car that will likely never see the drag strip again. But according to the rules, you have to have a dedicated set of racing tires  ::)  Heck, my car probably won't even do a burnout unless it's on 1 tire alone >:(  I'm not sure what to do, or what I'm going to do, but I know I've got to figure it out quick!

I am to paranoid about getting into rain so I called my tire guy and ordered some Mastercraft 275/60s and will get them mounted Saturday. I have a nice pair of 8.5" slots to put them on. I'm going to go ahead and run the DRs at the track. I change my mind too much as it is! As I am sure you have checked into, M/T makes some fairly narrow DRs but I know what you mean, it's hard to fork out money for a one time use thing. Too bad you can't find someone local that has an old pair of 8" slicks laying around.

Maybe I remember incorrectly. Wasn’t there a rule that stated you had to run slicks at the track?

You can run DOT drag radials and a lot of guys do. They just banned regular street tires...about 3 years ago. For a couple of reasons #1 they tend to mess up the track traction and #2 Mr. Freiburger didn't like seeing people show in absolutely bone stock vehicles. He felt you needed to do SOMETHING to the car, even if it was just change tires.
