Top loader question

As I was on one of my many winter projects, I was measuring up a new drive shaft on my 71 torino cobra. I noticed the top loader didn't have a drain plug, every other one I have owned has had a drain plug. Were they added later by the dealer or owner? The tag on the side is

All the ones I've had, and currently have, have drain plugs from the factory. There's a boss cast into the case where the hole is drilled, towards the front/bottom. I can't say about the early ones, but every toploader I've had has had a drain plug.

I can remember one box that didn't have a drain. I just remember not having to deal with it rocking in the jack as I installed it years ago. The balance point was just right at the plug and that sat in the saddle of my jack. Back when I used to play with them more I was going to make a saddle with a hole to allow it to sit flat. Same kinda problem with Nash's. They are unstable as heck being round cases. Been 20 yrs and I still haven't done anything about that either.

The drain plug was left off after 1970 which is why yours doesn't have it. If the casting number on your main case starts with C8 , the boss is in the casting for sure and it can be drilled and tapped if you like. "Some of the D2 cases I've seen don't have the boss cast in on the inside and shouldn't be modified.

Thanks for the info, I thought maybe I had a Monday morning screw up when the tranny was built. Its is a 31 spline, close ratio by the tag, I been told to pull the bottom tailshaft housing bolt out and it can drain that way.
