i got lucky
« on: May 07, 2017, 11:52:15 PM »
i just put a new rpm intake on my 428.i forgot to bend the head gasket tabs down, and got a bad seal, and it smoked.ok heres where i got lucky, when i took the intake back off,i found a piece of alu. in the lifter area.it is round and has a drill bit mark on one side and rough cast on the other.it matched up with the intake bolt holes.it somehow got in the intake at the edb foundry and i didnt find it when i  checked it over before i put it on.i had it upside down a few times but it didnt fall out till i ran the engine.im lucky i found it before it wound up in the wrong place.theres no damage on my intake,it was where the bit was about to pop out the back side,a little chunk came off before the bit popped through.check your parts out good before you put them on,i might not be as lucky next time

Use a borescope and check your ports.  Pull the rockers and inspect the bottoms of the bolt holes. A slightly too long rocker mounting bolt will push a piece of aluminum such as you describe into the port.  As long as you find the piece of aluminum it's not a big deal - but you will need to use sealer on the rocker bolts are it might smoke.

i am so glad i joined this forum, you were right Barry, the bottoms of the rocker holes were punched out.i reused my stock rocker bolts i had no idea they would punch out the bottoms of the rocker holes on these bbm heads.i would have bet money that it came from the intake.i had a couple holes that i didnt find the medal.they are small pieces,i hope they just blew on threw and out.i busted a cyl wall on my last 390.a bolt out of the bottom of the carb got in cyl no 7 and busted the wall and beat up the piston.if it werent for the knowledge on this forum,i would be lost.now im worried theres medal bits in my engine in unknown places

im going to use a bore scope in the spark plug holes too,in case i have one of those pieces of alu on top of a piston. those plugs that popped out of the bottom of the rocker bolt holes is only 1/16 inch thick.you would have thought they were more material in the bottoms of the holes or just punched out the rest of the way.i took a screwdriver and knocked one out with the palm of my hand

Did you use sealant on the rocker bolts after pushing through the port roof(s)?  If not you are going to need to do that now.  You can go one at a time - remove each bolt with the adjoining rockers unloaded, a spray of brake cleaner in the hole and on the bolt.  A wrap of Teflon tape - yes tape - around the bolt threads - and reassemble/retorque.

i used loctite thread sealer with ptfe-teflon on the rocker bolts,is that ok.it blowed out a puff when i fired it up today, but it seemed to quit after that, but i did not bring it up to temp to see if it would start back smoking
