Porting fe heads
« on: April 26, 2017, 11:44:24 PM »
Hey guys ive port matched my heads on my engine but prolly wasn't that good as it was my first time. But I was curious to learn. Ive heard people say don't touch floor then some say do touch the floor. Some say leave smooth and shiny others rough and course for fuel atomization. Do exhaust or leave exhaust.. So guess im asking if I went and picked up a set of fresh c4ae heads to replace my d2s what would be the best at home port job to do for a begginer, thanks for yalls help

If your time is worth nothing, it's probably worth it, otherwise I'd buy a pair of Edel or BBM heads.  Headbytes has a bunch of vids to guide you:

Edelbrock heads are a waste of money for a street build in my opinion. I think its funny they get away with selling them for that much haha. Now I know I can't do it yet, but just from asking around looking around I know you can port iron Fe heads to be a good street head, I was just needing to know how to finess the ports a little to sweeten her up a little per-say ;D

Personal to unclewill: I vote for the 442, GM-wise. I have a '68 442 that I have a history with, and there is a '69 442 across the street from me and another a 1/2-mile down the road. Lots of parts available for resto from Fusick and others.

Also, that orange Montego is actually a Cyclone GT. The side trim is a dead giveaway as a GT, and the triple taillights pegs it as a Cyclone. Montegos have two lights per pod. As a 429 car it is very rare and would be my first choice among all the cars I could see in the vid. Good channel, will. You are lucky to have subscribers. I have 42 '63 to '73 cars (trucks not counted) here that are rust and impact free, including 7 factory Cobra Jets, and there is zero interest from anyone at all to see me going through this stuff. Saves me the cost of a Go Pro I guess.

Thanks for the heads up on the Cyclone!  That car may end up being the one if I can work up a trade.  It'd be sweet with Boss heads right?  Do you want to trade one of your cars for my 427 s.o.?  That's what I have on the table...

Oh, and Edelbrock heads flow great and are much lighter than cast iron heads at a reasonable price (keeping the thread on track).

Boss heads on the Cyclone would be nifty, but if the original engine is intact and complete, that would be worth more, IMO. If those heads necessitate trimming the shock towers, then they are a no-no. Be aware that there are MUCH fewer resto parts for that car than your Cobra. In your situation, I would spend mucho time going in, around, and under that vehicle with a pad and pencil and camera. Given equal condition, almost any other car in that yard would be an easier resto. I will assume you know about the intermediate forum elsewhere, where you can field specific questions. Run the basic Marti first to put the car into perspective. One of my 7 Jets is a '70 Cyclone Spoiler 4-speed, so I know what a PITA they can be. However, once done you have a very unique vehicle that will confound most people at the car shows. It can be fun explaining your "Road Runner" to people.

As for 427 trades, I'm afraid I have those engines stacked to the ceiling (almost). My list of "gotta have" parts and cars is very, very short these days.

The general buzz (for a long time) about Ed heads is that they are marginally better than CJ heads out-of-the-box. Small margin. Any serious performance/stroker use should be approached with a grinder. Many better options, although we may have to cross BBM's off the list if Fat Boy gets trigger happy.

Let us know what happens to the Cyclone.

Thanks!  That's very good information...the rust in the hood was my first red flag on that car.  I've never seen a hood like that one before, so I figured it would be hard to find another.  We'll see if he'll trade that one, he's not a Ford guy but he has a Cobra replica - why he wants the side oiler.

Go back a few years and search Bill Ballanger post on his C4AE-G heads. Many of his older post were respected enough to be put on the fordfe.info site. I believe he had access to the equipment and did every thing himself. I posted the question here on the better common production iron head. The top two were C4AE-G then C6AE-R. If Mark jumps on this post he can tell you what he did to his D2TE-AA heads.
