If the car has the original ignition key switch (meaning old, loose and worn-out) try this. Fire it up in your driveway and start wiggling the key up/down/sideways in the lock itself and see if it cuts out. If so, get a new switch!

Last time I had a car do that, one of the push on coil wires was loose.  Vibration would cause it to wiggle, and that caused the bad idle, and sometimes to just quit.  I cut off the old slip on wire end when I found out that was the cause, and put on one that tightened down with a nut, and the problem was solved.

A 'push-on' wire end such as is often used at a coil will respond very favorably to a slight pinch to give a more secure connection.

The "boot" coating was very dry and brittle, and there was some significant corrosion on the inside, so I thought it best to just cut it off.
