1967 GT 500 Shelby

Hey guys in our Long Island newspaper there is a 1967 GT 500 in the (IN the garage section). Which is a nice thing they have once a week to show the cars in the area. Now I have met this guy at a big car show ( which I came in first and he came in second). He says he has an article from March 1967 in which he says he researched that the car in the article is his and it originally came with the 427 in it. Now of course that would be awsome but I thought no mustangs came with 427 not even the shelbys, he says his is one of 47. Any of you old Ford guys know anything about this. Didn't mean old just a figure of speech.

The idea of a 427 in a Mustang has been clearly debunked over the years.  Ford never built any.  Its possible that some were dealer installed, but no factory Mustangs ever came with a 427.

I don't know. I've met this same guy at least 4-5 times. Oddly enough he looked different each time. I knew it was the same guy because he didn't know didley squat about Mustangs and couldn't provide any real details on the car except "it was an original 427". He must get around pretty good, because this was in Ohio

Did I tell you about the guy who had an ORIGINAL 351 Cleveland powered Pinto? Built from the factory that way. It was the only one he ever saw.

Well...I say BS...If he had a 427 GT500 he would at least display the paper work at shows to prove it.He should at least have a report from SAAC...If someone got a pic of the tag or the Shelby # it wouldn't be hard to look up (I have the registry)..

I have a early model 68 with a 427 in it...Its a "W" code  mis stamped as a "C" code....honestly

Only 3 1967 Shelby GT 500's left Shelby American with 427's installed. They are # 00289, # 00544 and # 01947. None of these cars left the Ford assembly plant with a 427, the motors were swapped in at the Shelby American plant as a very expensive extra cost option. There are Shelby American records and paperwork on these cars.

I have been ar two shows and he doesn't have any paperwork other than a picture of Carroll Shelby in front of a 67 GT 500 that he says is his

There is a local guy here with a real 427 GTE Cougar...He has done countless mods to it and swears to everyone that the car was/is the only Cougar done by Shelby..Car was purchased here new and lots of us know the history of it includeing me...I have been looking at the car since it was new (I was 9)..He doesn't care and tells the storys to anyone who will listen...
He forgets that he brought the car to me when he bought it for my opinion..Yes I drove it...
All of his cars have been tagged (not by me) as one of none....
Paper work goes along way...

No, because I took the question as a whole. The 1967 Shelby GT 500 was conceived from the start as more of a high end personal luxury muscle car than the street legal race car the original 1965 Shelby Mustang had been. Shelby dealers and Ford had done marketing feedback surveys and knew potential buyers were more interested in deluxe interiors and available air conditioning along with distinctive styling at this point. That's bared out by the way the later Shelby's continued to be developed. The 428 was used right from the start. Although car #00289 is fairly early in 1967 Shelby production, cars had already been in production for a few months by that time and quite a few GT 500's ( with 428's ) produced before it. Both #00289 and #01947 were special ordered by their original owners and #00544 was developed by Shelby for Mel Burns Ford as the Super Snake.

Yeah, I first saw the GTE that Cory mentioned after the new owner bought it, it was pretty much all stock at the time. A while later, it showed up at a car show wearing a pair of aluminum heads and a 4 Weber carb setup, along with cast aluminum `Cougar`oil pan and valve covers, when I asked when he installed all these new parts, he said, Òh, that is how the car came from the factory! I guess he forgot that I looked at the car earlier! He also had a display sign made claiming that it was the only Cougar even built by Shelby. Kinda interesting, considering that by 1968, Shelby Mustangs were no longer build by Shelby, rather AO Smith in Michigan , who also built such exotic items such as hot water tanks, did the work! Maybe Shelby had a seperate assembly line made just for this one Cougar.
We have another well known FE BS artist in this area, he has a 68 Galaxie GT Q code car. Again, I saw this cars years before, when it was stock, other than some incredibly ugly rear fender flares. Several years later, the same car and owner appeared with the Galaxie freshly painted, and looking very nice. However, the 428 was now sporting Cobra Jet heads, a 1963 3x2 barrel setup, 65-67 427 long cast exhaust manifolds, and Magnum 500 wheels. Thing is, now he was telling everybody who would listen, that the car was special ordered that way when new!! At times the GTE and the Galaxie are at the same Ford meets, and the BS flows like water.
