Can't use ARP intake bolts with Street Dominator?
« on: January 03, 2016, 05:09:21 PM »
This was a bit of a surprise because I thought I had read on this forum that the problem with the street dominator was that there was too LITTLE meat on some of the attachment points, and the stock bolts were too LONG. I'm not finding that to be the case.

Using a vernier caliper with the intake sitting on the heads with the gasket in place (admittedly not compressed), I'm finding that the depth the bolts will enter the threaded holes on the heads is not adequate to secure the intake. By my measurements the ARP bolts (455-2102 - ARP doesn't provide any dimensions) measure 2.4 inches (allowing for the washers) or 1.4 inches fro the two short ones. I have plenty of depth (between 3.58 and 3.05 inches for the long ones and 1.95 for the short ones), but when I measure the depth to the first thread, it only leaves between .16 and .29 inches of bolt penetration into the threads for the deeper holes.

A 3/8 bolt is .375 wide, and I think at least that much thread to thread contact is required. I was expecting to have to shorten some bolts, not stretch them. $45 wasted on the ARP fasteners.

As a rule of thumb, I just look for .500 of thread below the manifold surface when I stick the bolts through the manifold on the bench,  no gasket, just sitting there bare with a lock and flat on them

I always check the depth of the holes to make sure they are deep enough and they are, but I check anyway.

I keep a set of bolts in a box marked "FE Intake Bolts" and it seems no two intakes are alike.  Maybe call ARP with the lengths you need and they might swap or just send you bolts for being nice :)

If the heads are aluminum i'd use longer bolts, may be fine for iron heads as is.
