427 Side Oiler Bell Housing
« on: October 24, 2014, 05:42:59 AM »
New to forum.  Just acquired a 62 Galaxie and a 427 Side Oiler.  Would like a recommendation on a bell housing to go with my large spline 69 top loader.  Lots of truck bells out there and have heard there are spacing problems ......what car bell will work with my application?  Will likely use, or at least want to use, headers and original style clutch linkage.

Welcome Fred-  You do not want a truck bell, they are deeper and should not be used with your toploader.  Search David Kee toploaders, he's got a listing of all car bells by year and application complete with casting numbers, a good resource.  Quick time makes one for mid $600's too if you want to go aftermarket, all depends on what you plan to do with the car.

2X on David Kee or a used Lakewood bell.

Somewhat separately, I'm truly shocked at what Quicktime bells go for.....like $700! Amazing they can get these prices but it is driven by only two players, both owned by the Hays/Lakewood/Mr. Gasket group.

Nothing wrong with using a truck bell in the car.
All you need to do is set the correct depth of the pilot bushing/bearing.
Upgrade to a steel flywheel for your safety.
There is only one new after market bell available today and that is the Quicktime.
An old Lakewood is an option.
The biggest issue is the transmission. If it is a big spline then it is a close ratio.
Ford's not so good idea.
You need to seriously look into changing it in to a wide ratio.
It's a simple thing and will not only increase the performance of the car but the valve as well. jmo

Also, a 69 Toploader won't have the the shifter in the right place for a Galaxie, and will be 3" shorter than the Galaxie trans as well.

Well there are 69 big spline long tail TL's.
More rare than the short tail though.

I appreciate all the help and expertise.  Now you have given me some things to think about.  Wide ratio vs. close.  The fact the trans is shorter overall is also a concern.  The RUGAE2 with tail shaft numbers 070R-7A040-A  and factory shifter trans came with the car and I assumed the guy knew what he was talking about.  Well assumptions are dangerous.

So anybody out there interested in the short spline close ratio trans?  Anybody have what I need and would be willing to trade?

That is a 69 Mustang trans, so it is shorter than the Galaxie version by 3" and the shifter will not fit without cutting the floor up.

That particular toploader is for a 69 Boss 429, so you might be better off selling it and building what you need.

Talk to David Kee and see how much to build what you are looking for. Unfortunately Ford never built a big in/out toploader with the wide ratio gears, but they can be built from aftermarket parts. Big in/out Galaxie trans are even more rare.
