352/360 Rod Mixture
« on: February 03, 2014, 08:17:46 PM »
EDIT: SOLD ENGINE
I pulled out the .030 over 360 out for inspection. Planed on cleaning it up for a stand in. I found rod caps with EDC, C1AE and C7TE. Three generations of rods so I am assuming either an Autozone, Sun or City Engins rebuild. From my experience these have to be the sloppiest builders. I'm not going to bother at this time with it. I'm sure there is a reason for the rod cast change. Dont want to gamble on a vibration. Are these rods different weights?

I would always check the weight of the big end and the small end. I'm sure they dont weigh the same. I would match them up with your lightest rod you have. Why take a chance!? JMHO

Is Sun engine still in business?  I used to buy from them in the past, I could get a 390 long block for 600 delivered, with a warranty in the late 80's.

Perfect for the snow plows and farm trucks and they were usually pretty decent for the price, customer loved that the truck would only be down a weekend too

Didnt realize Sun was a chain. Our personal experiience was with 302's and 350's. Family business kept dad too busy to do our own rebuilds so we cycled through the crap Dallas Sun and City had to offer.

Oh, one last thing Chris... You may want to have the center to center checked out on the rods. It may not be a bad idea to do so. JMHO

Good idea. I have a few sets of C1AE and C7TE rods I would use first. As far as running a 360 with 390 pistons I have considered milling a set of D2TE heads and an intake till 9.5:1 cr is achieved.

I don't think it was, but they were so cheap, even shipping from Texas was a screaming deal over buying in Massachusetts.

I thought they closed their doors years ago though

In 05 a City sales rep came by the shop with a brochure. I was out on a test drive at the time so I didnt get any current info. Seems 350 long blocks were about $650.

Well, I joined the AF in 1995, and that was the last time I personally bought and a 360/390 was cheaper than that even with shipping.

However I did a search on the BBB and they closed their doors, but no negatives, said "owner driven" so maybe he just stopped doing it
