360? 4x4 freshen up in need of opinions
« on: January 07, 2014, 08:52:06 PM »
:) a project of mine. I have a 68 f250 4x4 with what I believe to be a 360 someone swapped in before I got it. It has the 2bbl intake on it, I am going to figure out exactly what I am working with when I get the engine pulled. My goal is to have a reliable engine that makes decent power and sounds good. Nothing to radical yet being as it will be driven often to work. It has a 4 speed behind it and 4.11 gears. I had a Lunati Bracket Master 2 cam (.554/.554" lift, 230/230 duration at .050", 109 LSA, 105 ICL) in my old 69 f100 and it sounded great but I have heard some bad rumors about there stuff since. Any input is greatly appreciated.

P.S. Love the site!!

How deep are you going into it?

It's very hard to justify staying with a 360 if you are going to rebuild and buy pistons, so if you rebuild it, I'd go 390.  Regardless standard FE stuff applies.

1 - Headers and good duals, combined with a distributor recurve makes a huge difference
2 - 600 vac sec carb combined with an alum intake (Performer probably works well with a 360, but with your gears I'd still lean toward Edel RPM if I was buying new).  If you keep the 2 barrel, I have had good luck with the Holley 500 2 barrel
3 - Keep the cam sane, that bracket master sounds a little stout, I'd probably go with a 268H out of the box, but it may not have the sound you want.  Maybe get a custom 268 ground with 108 centers if you want a little lope
4 - C8AE-H heads are a little grumpy without some work, a modern valve job, clean up the bowls, nothing crazy, mostly a good blend to the valve job and clean up the guide bosses, and CJ valves if the budget allows

All of this will work well with 360 cid or 390 cid, just be sure to watch compression, with a short cam and early intake timing with a relatively heavy truck, it can get fussy on fuel quickly if not careful

If you are in or near Georgia, I've got a 390 crankshaft for you.  Post your location, I'm sure there are a few other folks in your neighborhood.

I am located in southern PA. I am thinking I am going to have to open up the bottom end cause the oil pressure hot is about 15psi. The previous owner beat on the truck pretty bad, used it for off road use only. I eventually want to completely redo the whole truck but for now I would like to get it on the road and reliable. My buddy sold me a Holley 650dp cheap, it just needs a rebuild. Since I will probably be in the bottom end it would be nice to get some more cubic inches out of the engine. Would it be worth working those heads or getting my hands on a better set of heads? I know they are getting hard to find and expensive for the decent factory ones.

Well, there are slightly better heads, but you'll need to match the exhaust ports for truck headers.  C6AE-R is really the only other option, but unless you planned on porting them, I would run what you have.  FWIW, I run D2s that flow almost 280 cfm, twin to the C8s for the most part on my 445, they do great.

Isn't Les Schmader in Pa?  I'm sure he could take care of the heads for you.

I've driven plenty of 360's and 390's.  I'd try to find a 390 crank if I was rebuilding an engine.
