Street Dominator or Blue Thunder dual plane for this 462 ?
« on: July 08, 2026, 09:32:50 PM »
Hi.
I am in the final stages of building a 428 / 462 stroker for my 1966 Fairlane GTA.I need to decide which intake to use as I have both.
Specs as follows:
Street / restored, Day 2 restomod style car. 428 C cratch service block 0.030 " over. Scat cast rotating assembly. Stress honed, balanced etc. 10,4 compression ratio. Out of the box TFS heads. Custom hydraulic roller cam with 236 / 240 @0.050 ( 300 / 300 gross) and around .600 lift.Custom made
1 3/4" full length headers with some tight bends to fit Fairlane chassis. 2 1/2" exhaust with h-pipe and see-thru mufflers..( also cut-outs fitted in case..you know..).
750 annular discharge Holley Ultra carburetor. K&N filter.
Engine redline / shift point 5700-6000 rpm.
Rollerized C6 with steeper 1 +2 gears from 4R70W. 2000-2400 stall ( against the brake)converter. 9" rear with 2,75 gears and TrueTrac, 31 spline axles.15" wheels.

The car will be used for overall cruising, and also highway driving ( 2,75 gears), with occasional quartermile runs with drag radials.

I have studied The Great Intake through many times during the years and also have tried both of those intakes in the car´s  previous 390 with around 450 horses. Both worked well, perhaps the ST Dom a bit better.

Now I cannot decide which one to use in the new 462.

BT intake´s ports match TFS ports perfectly. Street Dominator has a bit smaller ports and has been quite extensively ported in the plenum area.
BT would likely need an open spacer under the carb so that the 750 would not choke the air intake due it´s smallish size for 462 cubes.

I am looking for overall smooth rich brute torque curve with no hesitation below 2000 rpm but also want the powerful rush above 5000 rpm.

Thanks !

Bit more info about the cam. It is ground with 112 LSA and has 106 intake CL if installed straight up. IVO 12, IVC 44 EVO 53 EVC 9.  236 intake and 242 exhaust ( not 240 as I wrote in the first post). Lift .586 intake and .614 exhaust.I installed the cam 3 degrees retarded so the real ICL is 109 degrees as I figured there will be be plenty of low rpm torque anyway.

I think that either manifold would work well, but with the additional cubes over your previous engine the Blue Thunder intake might be a bit better.  Hard to say for sure, but I think I'd go with that one - Jay

Why are you not considering a Victor?  Are you going for a nostalgia look?

I think I'd vote for the BT as well.

From an airflow standpoint, there is no comparison between them if they are as cast or close to that.  If they have been gasket matched, the Blue Thunder is by far the best.  The Street Dominator intake manifold in Jay's Intake Comparison tests that did so well was my ported version that flowed nearly 360cfm average.  I still have that intake manifold.  It supported 638hp IIRC, and 604lb/ft.  A BT intake will flow 340+ out of the box or close to it.  A well ported BT will average 400 cfm and support most any head out there on a street style engine.

Thanks for your input guys. Blue Thunder it is. The manifold does not have a cut in the plenum divider, guess I will run an open 1/2" spacer under the carb. Cant wait to run the engine in the dyno and then in the car ! My friend has these TFS heads in his 482 ci -55 Tbird gasser and what a torque monster that car is. Anything over 3300 rpm launch and the car wants to flip over :D
