engine oil cooler relocation
« on: December 17, 2024, 10:42:16 AM »
I am on to the last part of adding A/C to my 66 fairlane right now I have 2 oil coolers in front of the radiator one for engine and one for trans that need to be relocated.

I have an option to relocate them to the rear of the car. Question I would like to ask is relocating the engine oil cooler at the rear of the car will add around 3m/(10 foot) of -10/(5/8) length of oil lines oil cooler holds around 14oz of oil.

How much will this change oil pressure I have never had to think about running such long engine oil cooler lines before any one have experience with a problem like this?

Cheers JB.

I would be very surprised if you notice any change in oil pressure at all.  Worst case, step up a line size if it becomes a problem.  If you start the car often in below zero temps, this may be a different conversation.

I've seen pressure loss even when just pumping the oil up to a remote oil filter hanging off the water pump.

In engineering school, we used to have to calculate pumping losses across systems like this.  It would take me forever to get back into that frame of mind, but I could if someone held a gun to my head.  The easiest route would be to yell at Doug Garifo at POP and see what he has seen in situations like yours.  My guess is that he will tell you spring up your pump.

You will more than likely need to put in the HP spring. Most of my Cobra guys loose between 20-30 psi going through the line, cooler and filters and back. You will be in the same boat. Another thing, with that much plumbing you will need to run and HV Pumps.

I could use -12 line weather is hot here year round so no problem with freezing temps

I am using a POP HV pump and with cooler in its current location with around 1m total line length I sit at 40psi hot at idle and 60psi cruising. Shimming the pump spring is not an option right now that is something I would do if I was ready to replace lifters or notch the towers. I will email Doug I did not even think about asking his opinion I would rather not have to mount the cooler back there but it would let me run a fan and much less fab work.

What do you set your HV pumps at do you think I would need HP spring in my POP HV pump? If I had to run a set up like this?
