Anyone running the newer MSD box, Ultra 6A/ 6A Plus?
« on: August 16, 2024, 02:22:57 PM »
My 6AL-2 started going in and out so I’m just using my RTR distributor . The Ultra has some nice features but I’m mostly interested in users experiences. We are talking MSD after all.

Thanks

I currently run a MSD 6520 Digital 6 Plus  in my race/street car. I bought it used and installed it in 2015 not long before I went on Hot Rod Drag Week. It’s still working fine, no issues. Hopefully this won’t jinx it lol. I have another one I bought used that’s going in the other car I’m building, so haven’t tried that yet.

It used to be, with the “old” MSD company, you could send their stuff in to be repaired and it was very reasonable, so I never worried much about buying this stuff used. I don’t know how the repair department is working with the “new” MSD company. I’ve seen various racers mention an independent guy that repairs MSD stuff and has a good reputation, might be what I would try in the future if I had an issue. Unfortunately I don’t have his contact info at the moment, just in case someone asks.

Here’s my installation

Kevin, I recently sent a distributor to them in El Paso for a new gear, lockout and once over. I had to get a supervisor on the phone cuz I could not get the first guy I spoke with to guarantee the distributor would be shimmed the way I wanted. “It will be by the factory specs” Not good enough, the last one they did was at .032 which is outside of factory specs. I told them I wanted it at .025 but it took talking to the supervisor for 20 minutes, ( nice guy actually).

The new units are another generation from yours. Some adjusting can be done via a smart phone. I was looking to hear about any quirks or fails the Ultra may have. I believe they came out last year.

My 6AL-2 and 7AL-3 have both been repaired twice by them. The repair cost is determined by how many parts have to be replaced.

Have you looked at Ice Ignition systems? https://www.iceignition.com/ I would never run a msd any more there quality is just not like it use to be

I can push a button and change timing curve or advance/retard on the fly wile driving I have 100's of options for that and push a button to raise or lower rev limiter.

Also interested in hearing any feedback on these.

I have a Digital 6 plus - some of them are not repairable because they are potted, at least that's what they told me, turns out mine was repairable.

Thanks JB, was not aware of their products. If I was starting all over I would likely give them more consideration. ( someone on their end needs to do some editing however, they have the FE series called out as 354-428).

I am sure they don't do too many FE engines but they can make what ever you need and there should be good suppliers in the USA when got mine made they sent me a dizzy blank and 3 caps to work out what would work with my 2x4 intake. All there stuff is custom tailored to your specs and they can repair reprogram it.
