Over-center Spring Worn?
« on: September 09, 2021, 08:07:28 PM »
The seemingly never ending saga of my four speed conversion has yet another installment. I rebuilt my toploader and have it back on the road, with about 325 miles on it. All went well, for the most part. Yesterday I installed a new stop for the clutch pedal and readjusted my clutch to ensure free play was still good. I ended up having the same issue I had prior to rebuilding, which I've come to suspect is a lack of necessary pedal travel. I go back to making adjustments and I go back and forth, from the adjuster at the clutch fork, to the clutch pedal height adjustment under the hood. I've got it somewhat sorted out, but I suspect the 55 year old over-center spring may be worn and not providing the tension and height it originally had (to the point of possibly creating issues).

Has anyone ever replaced an over-center spring due to it being worn (or suspected of being worn)? If so, what symptoms presented and did your replacement solve your problem?

Has anyone ever eliminated their over-center spring? If so, what did you do?

Thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.
