FE Engine Dyno Results / Re: 464 fe
« Last post by TwoFifty on December 02, 2025, 02:16:57 PM »
Sorry to dig up an earlier thread.  Tried sending a PM direct to 69RamAir but got outsmarted by the tests to ensure I'm human (go figure).

Question to 69RamAir is whether you'd be willing to share what the before/after testing looked like between the 2" dyno header runs compared to the 6114 header runs on the dyno.  If I read it correctly it looked like you may have tried both on the dyno?

I'm intrigued to see what "street headers" cost for power on a combo with this size/power.

Thanks!

Thank you for the ideas. Yes, I may be overthinking it. This is for a Holley Sniper EFI system. It certainly sounds easier to add a port to the side pipes than to modify the headers. I’ll just have to be patient since fitting side pipes with body installed is a ways off.

of course i was only asking about the primary drive from crank to stub cam.you have to be on another planet with unlimited time and budget to do that one pictured.lol.
also the crank in this engine uses a bbc snout and i would have to find a crank gear for the primary that would fit.

An expensive and complicated (but pretty) solution - looking to fix a nonexistent problem.

+1 on that.  In fact, on all but one of the SOHCs that I have tested, the chain stretch will retard both cams a few degrees at high RPM (one engine saw the left cam advance a couple degrees while the right cam retarded, but that's another story).  So around 4000 RPM you can get the benefits of advanced cam timing, but by 7000 RPM the cam timing retards a few degrees, which is what the engine wants to make a little more power.  It's like variable cam timing on a modern engine, but just using the stock SOHC configuration.  It is an advantage over a gear drive.

Back in the 1960s Sneaky Pete Robinson ran a gear drive on his SOHC dragster, but the way he did it turned the two cams in opposite directions.  This solved the problem of the differences in geometry between the valve train action between the left and right cams, so he could run aftermarket grinds (which were the same lobe on both cams) without any loss of power due to different valve train geometries on the left and right side.  Nowadays, thanks to work that Barry and I did with Billy Godbold at Comp Cams, you can get cam grinds that have slightly different lobes on the left and right sides to compensate for the left to right geometry issues, just like Ford did with their original SOHC cams.  As a result, from my perspective anyway there is no reason to use a gear drive to run the cams on the SOHC.

Barry nailed it, find a spot and point it up toward the footbox, aim up as close as you can to 10:00 / 2:00 as you can. and make sure you give a little room for engine rock.  Nobody will likely even see it with a Cobra sitting low.

As far as location, I like to see the location a bit farther back from the primary pipes, not sure if it matters, but the O2 can either see mostly one cylinder's output or a blend of the 4 on that bank.  I wouldn't go to the rear bumper, but all modern EFI kits use a heated sensor, not a big deal.   I shoot for a little bit further away, (think rear of collector or even in the front of an H-pipe on a traditional exhaust)  and depending on the EFI system you use, there may be an adjustment to O2 delay that corresponds to how far from the exhaust port it is, not all have those, but it allows a little offset if very close or very far away.  That calculation is generally done by measuring and using the EFI kit recommendation.

You're over thinking it.  Just put the sensor in an inch or two forward of the point where it goes into the single tube/muffler area.  Get it as high as you can before hitting the footbox etc - just don't point it down to the ground (lowest spot would be vulnerable to removal by speed bumps...).  All the instruction want them "up to avoid moisture contamination and for longevity - but you really don't care if you need to buy another one in 30,000 miles.  If you're running EFI with it you obviously need it always installed.  But if it's for data gathering, you can put the bung pointing outside the car and plug it during normal use after tuning.  I have seem OEM test cars running around Detroit with tons of wires and boxes flapping around in the breeze...  No real car guy is ever going to object to the visuals of an O2 bung/plug - it gives you something to talk about for those that don't understand.

Somewhat echoing the other comments regarding compression and cam sizing.  My thoughts are that the main issue with your parts list is that crankshaft.  The 4.375 crank means that you have a large cubic inch package, accentuating the cam size limitations.  Suggestions would be to either get much larger cams - or a much smaller stroke crank - depending on your desires for the package.  If built as a "real" 427, the cams would still be on the small side - but much more appropriate.  If you really want to use that long stroke you're going to need to swap out the cams - or build a Cammer that behaves like a "truck engine".  If this is just a fairgrounds/parking lot/show car deal I guess it wouldn't matter - but that's not my style....
