FE Technical Forum / Re: Oil pump dyno thoughts ???? hmmm
« on: July 22, 2013, 04:56:48 PM »
But then again, I don't have any data.  It would be a fun test to try, except that it's such a pain to pull the oil pan...

-says the guy that pulled 400 FE intakes.    ;D

I love pulling FE intakes. ;D  I hate pulling oil pans.  >:(  You will never see a book titled "The Great FE Oil Pan Comparo" LOL!

LOL,just flip the engine over on the DYNO so the pan is on top, that would make it easier to pull the pan. Come to think of it pulling a stock FE intake would be easier if it was on the bottom.....

This may be the thread to bring this up,it dyed on the other board about a year ago.

Oil Presure v. Oil temp
Ive noticed with my FE going down the road,up to full temp I have right on the bypass spring just over 65psi,I call it 67psi,2300rpm. To my mind I'm bypassing oil all the time to maintain that pressure. I've ran it through the gears with a co pilot watching the OP gauge and he reported "0ver 80psi" at 6000 so the By Pass cant keep up. The clearences are tighter, over all internal leaks are less I guess. Thats with 20w50 Valvoline Syn.

Now back in the 00's (lol) I had a new 03 Mercury Marauder, being like all gear heads I wanted a real oil pressure gauge, the factory one was a fake never left 65psi when car was running. I put a real gauge in it and found it moved....alot from 10-15 at idle up to over 90 when cold on start up. All with 5w20 oil.

Back to the FE Mustang.
When it was cold here in Tx. I was a little late in changing oil and still had my normal 20w-50 in it. I was also doing my best to keep it "Show Ready" so I was wiping it down (over the top cleaning it really) EVERY NIGHT when I got home from work, about 11pm. The Oil Pan was HOT to the touch.
After a few weeks I got off my @$$ and changed the oil to 15w40,near same outside temps, high 40's(LOL Tx cold) same anal cleaning habbits(that sounds wroung) but the oil pan was bearly warm (?) The oil pressure at idle was down a little but going down the road the pressure was "just below" 65 at 2000 I didn't run it to see what MAX was. I thought about that pan surface temp drop and wondered if the bypass was just heating the oil for no reason?

My friend runs strait 60w oil in his Boss 302 track car with a big oil cooler because he looses OP due to the Oil Temp, car comes off the track at near 0 at idle with 40w,25psi with 60w, he says. I dont think he cares to debate the whys,he wants to see OP at idle,I dont know if it looses pressure at 8000rpm or not with lighter oil.

My thought on my street car is leaning toward swinging pressure up to 2000/2300 is no problem as long as I'm not in the bypass 100% of the time, this may actually lower my oil temp because I'm not bypassing excessively, even though my idle pressure will be about 20-25 at 900rpm,so dropping back to a 10w30 will be ok as long as I maintain 10psi per 1000rpm+ 10psi or so. I'm thinking 70psi at 6000rpm?

IF I still show oil pressure do I want to run the thinnest oil that maintains pressure at idle? What am I loosing with a thinner oil? Will my solid Flat tappet cam hate me with lower oil pressure/thinner oil(Film Strength)?

Was it the lack of a blasting step after heat treat that gave the Weiand and Offenhouser Manifolds thier look back in the old days ('80's LOL)?
Edelbrock intakes always LOOKED nicer hanging on the wall.

and it makes a nice flywheel for the front of the engine...lol just kidding Jay.

The trigger "wheel" on my sport trac was about 3" wide and about 3 1/2" in dia. even with my crappy sawzall, cuttoff wheel machine tools I could made a bracket that would hit that.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Question about a Tremec TKO
« on: April 18, 2013, 03:36:23 PM »
I have a TKO in my 68 coupe behind a 433ci fe.
The shifter sits dead center on the top of the trans but ends up about 1" too far forward, had to cut a notch in the shifter hole. I have no console so I cant comment there.

I have installed 2 TKO's,one in a Comet the other in my current 68. They dont fit...........without modes.

On my Comet I tried to beat it in,ended up basicly cutting the top of the tunnel out and adding about 2"strips along the cut line.
In my Mustang I wasted no time ,just shoved it into (near) place chalk lined around it and cut the top of the trans tunnel out. Rasied it about an inch and it fits fine. I cut from about an inch infront of the trans to bellhousing face,1" off the sides of the trans ,back to about an inch infront of the raer shifter mount. Metal work it a bit then fit some sheet metal to fill the gap on the sides and back. I also made my own trans mount but as said the stocker will work but needs about a 1/2" spacer to raise the trans tail. My set up has the stock 4 1/2-5* engine angle.

They called that a camparo! LOL
My co worker went all slack jawed as he read the CC article,I then Laid The Great Intake Camparo on him,Chevy guy looked the book over for about an hour....had no comment when he returned it.

I love the air gap RPM that Edelbrock is too thick to produce,I have ideas too but life seems to cut into my Mustang time.

The Black seats are Pro Cars? Compared to stock seats hows the seat bottom to steering wheel clearance?

The blown interior gives a nice "rich" look, nice.

Is this a new build,Intake install? I ask because if you had the intake off and did not use a distributer to "pilot" the hole it may be out of line enough to cock the distributer just that much to bind things up.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Jay,Road to Drag Week 2013?
« on: March 08, 2013, 11:21:27 AM »
Jay, just wondering if the road to dragweek starts in your driveway this year.

296
The TW intake would be awsome with EFI.

Checkout DIYAuto tune for MegaSquirt info, click around that site for just about all the info you need on EFI.

I believe they sell individule injector bungs that can be plumbed for AN type hoses, that may give you a more "period correct" look without the tell tale fuel logs on both sides of the engine.

I think you will find with dual throttle bodies that they will both be about 99.5% closed to get it to idle down, efi seems to find the air it needs. I would also do a pair of carb bases for the throttle section, you could just about mount a 4" tube to the top if you wanted,LOL. A pair of used(up) Holleys gutted would do the job cheap, and trick the eye for sure.

If you havent done so yet look over some of Jays Road to Drag Week post for pieces of EFI tuning .

297
Jay although it's just bench racing...
How do you feel your 3 packages would have faired ET/Power wise to what you have seen of Drag Week results?

Will we see a seperate "Heres What Happened to...." thread?
Still waiting for the why you have CPS problems in car and not on the dyno.
Thanks
Lance

FE Technical Forum / Re: Pre-lubing tool

Well I use a 1/4" 1/4" drive deep socket with a 6" extension and speed handle.
I've also been known to just chuck the end of the extension in a 1/2 drive drill run in reverse.
No special tool required, works on small blocks too....

299
Wow Jay what a month.
I was hopeing to meet you in Dallas this year.
I've been rooting for you all the way.

All three cars are awsome on their own but to have all of them at one events would have been cool.
The HR is just a killer piece.

I'm sorry it all went to hell, then got worse... but now you have time to run all the engines on the dyno and get them set up and de-bugged,fix transmissions, wireing, modify fuel pumps....

I'm sure #1 is close the shop door for a while and take the wife out for a night on the town, or 30.

Thank you Jay for taking us on the ride!

BTW sell the article to Hot Rod,it's a great story!

Not that it matters...LOL.

Stay with the as Dyno'd set up installed. You dont have time to change that package now.

As for the hood scoop. Does the engine HAVE to be covered by rule? If not fab up the "shakerish" scoop as is and let the TB's show under it and track test.
