Non-FE Discussion Forum / 351c Vibration/Growl
« on: October 09, 2022, 12:01:49 PM »
Ok right at the top I did not assemble the engine it is supposed to be a 408 stroker the owner purchased the short block assembled by an unknown party. The goal of the 71Boss 351 is as stock appearing as possible so stock exhaust manifolds, complete stock exhaust stock numbers correct damper.

The damper has had the offset weight machined out so the Assumption was the engine is internal balanced so a non counter weight flywheel was purchased.

Now a few problems I’ve found.
First on first fire up it leaked like a sieve, upper half of rear main backward….
Got that fixed and started again.
Setting floats
Verify idle
Alt charging
Set base timing
Rolled throttle off idle to about 2000-2500 and the engine just chugged and shook…..
I looked at timing again a verified it was only 25-30deg total.

After talking with an engine builder friend he tossed out rotor phasing. I set up to test and at base 15 deg the rotor was well past the No.1 post….hum.
The vacuum is disabled on this correct, less Pertronics, date coded distributor so the timing plate was locked incorrectly. It is important to the owner that the correct date coded vacuum can be in place even though it doesn’t work.
I reset the phasing and frankly it was much better I was able to verify total timing all in at 2800,36deg.
But still that growl /shake ….

In the past I have mistakenly installed a 28inoz flywheel on a 50inoz engine it didn’t growl but did feel like it was going to jump off the jack stands  at 3000rpm.

I’m open to any suggestion at this point.
I feel the engine needs to come out but just want to ensure it’s not a tune issue of some kind.
Easy things first.
I’m going to pull the starter and ensure there is no counter weight on flywheel,I put it on but didn’t take note because ,well “that’s the right one”.
Next pull clutch…..
Beyond that any ideas?

Thanks for your help I know there are some very knowledgeable builders here that’s why I’m asking.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 351c weird timing problem
« on: April 22, 2022, 11:35:45 PM »
I will start out by saying this makes no sense….
My friend got his R code 72 Mach one back after 17 years the guy he sold it to put less than 500 miles on it in 17 years!
The previous owner spent a boat load of money to get it running…sort of.

While trouble shooting some odd engine running behavior the timing was checked it’s off scale at about 40deg advance! First thought is damper is slipped. We piston stopped it. At TDC it’s 2 deg advanced 20deg/24deg=2deg.
Anyway….
If you set the damper to 20 and drop the distributor in it will not run. It’s not 180 out.
Pull dist out and rotate rotor one tooth and drop it in it will run,but no way to know what the timing is.
Being gone for 15 years ,IF the timing chain for some reason came off and was reinstalled a tooth off would the engine run and if it did would the timing act like this?
I don’t think it’s a worn chain or slack because if you back the crank up there seems to be only about 5 deg of movement before the rotor moves.
My friend built this engine 20 years ago,it (should) still have the double roller chain he installed dot to dot he has nothing showing the timing cover having been removed. He has a stack of receipts from the previous owner listing every thing done to get the car running.

Any ideas?

FE Technical Forum / Crank position for rocker install
« on: October 30, 2021, 09:09:54 PM »
Odd title I know. Back on the old forum it was mentioned to position the crank in a way that the valves ended up more or less neutral while tightening the rocker shafts.
One position for 1-4 bank another for 5-8.
Stock dampers had marks or notches.
Does anybody know the positions starting from TDC?
Thank you in advance.

Thank you to all who positively replied to my gas question last week, that went off the rails and got locked.
We made it to our new home in Colorado safe and sound but now I have to go back this weekend and do it again!
I have to bring my FE Mustang home!
If you see a blue 68 Mustang on a trailer it’s me,and it’s not broken!

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Way off topic. Gas availability Tx-Co
« on: May 12, 2021, 09:46:07 AM »
I’m hoping to get some real world info on gas availability for our big retirement move THIS WEEKEND.

So far there has been little to no negative effects on gas availability here in San Antonio, except for a price kick.

We are driving from San Antonio-Amarillo-Routan NM- Pueblo CO.
Anybody have knowledge of how gas availability is holding up along that way?

Thanks in advance.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 9in Ford Noise
« on: February 08, 2021, 07:56:08 PM »
Ive seemed to have pretty good luck with setting up gears,so much so as I do them for friends with no noise problems. But,much like the cobbler with barefoot kids I can’t get my set up quite. I’ve put 3 new sets of gears in this one case and they all scream!
I said case because this weekend it dawned on me the screamer 1 was my old set ,including diff and bearings and retainer I swapped out of a C7 case into an N case it was quite in the old case. I have then over 5 years purchased 3 new sets of gears and installed in this N case all with the same results noise under load (drive side) quite in cost.
This past weekend I pulled it again and ran the pattern, dead center,as a matter of fact the gears had just polished the drive pattern into the gear and the marking compound verified the pattern.
Has anybody had a gear case that was just bad?

FE Technical Forum / Port Flow Questions
« on: February 04, 2021, 10:50:01 PM »
Reading Jay’s cylinder head development thread sparked a few questions for me.
I’m not building or porting anything like some of you have done these are just question for discussion.

What is the downside to port flow going sonic? I’m assuming this referred to intake flow carrying fuel.

The next is port flow stacking,or backing up. Again my assumption is this relates to intake flow where the air/fuel column slams into either a port wall or the back of the valve and swirls back into the port.

I know a few here can “see” the air inside ports, can you help a guy see some of that picture?

I hope all is well, has the engine made noise yet?

FE Technical Forum / Modern Single Plane Intake Flow Questions
« on: January 24, 2020, 02:24:43 PM »
Of the 2 common single plane intakes Edelbrock Victor and Trick Flows Trackheat(?) for the FE ,does one have better as cast flow balance than the other?

Does one have flow better than the other?

I'm running FAST ez2.0 TB injection on a Performer RPM with a 1” open spacer and the mixture distribution is noticeably uneven. Numbers 1&5 are leaner than 4&8 so high/low plenum doesn't appear to make a difference. The spacer helped this but it's still noticeable .

The engine is a 433” (4.70 x 4.125) with a set of Berry's Stage X Edelbrocks  from about 10 years ago, they got freshened last year, 270@.600 . Hyd roller from Brent. I have no lack of low end with a 3.70 rear gear and TKO 5spd.

So oddly,to this group I'm sure, I'm not looking for max peak flow I'm looking for balanced flow, much in the same way balancing the flow on the old 5.0 intakes increased performance. I'm sure JDC had his hand in a few of those back in the day. It was a very popular mod here in San Antonio.

So I guess I'm asking which of those two have the smaller runner cross section.

FE Technical Forum / Performer RPM w/throttle body FI
« on: October 17, 2019, 10:21:03 PM »
I have FAST ez 2.0 FI on my 433ci FE. I have been using a Performer RPM with a 1/2” open spacer .
I found the open spacer helps mixture distribution. Reading spark plugs shows a noticeable rich mixture on the corner plugs without the spacer. With the spacer the mixture is more even, center plugs richened up but ends still read richer. I don’t have the clearance to add more spacer so I’m looking the other way, cutting the plenum divider . I’ve read the Dyno results on cutting the divider with a carb I don’t know if the results will be the same with TBI. If your not failure with the FAST TBI it has 8 injectors with pairs aimed under each throttle blade from the front or back. 4 shoot into each side of the plenum more or less toward the center of each plenum half.
I haven’t found anything on line about modifying a 2 plane to perform better with TBI.,everything I’ve seen says use a single plane.
Anybody have experience with this?
Time to look for another Streetmaster?

FE Technical Forum / Oil leak hell
« on: November 12, 2018, 12:17:46 AM »
I have had my engine combo for 9years now,I hurt it this year and its  been together and running since May this year.

This block,Edelbrock head,RPM intake combo has ALWAYS had an oil leak on the right side. It drips off the starter as if the starter makes oil.

When I had the heads off I looked them over and they didn't appear hurt in any way that would cause a leak. They were not hurt in any way actually.

Over the years I've had the pan off several times and replace the rear main many times, had the trans, flywheel off etc. No leaks I can find on the back of the block.

Replaced the valve covers.
More valve cover gaskets than I can count.
Pulled intake several times to reseal. I've used both Right Stuff and TA31 but never an end seal gasket

I'm trying to figure out how to pressurize the crank case to help find this darn leak.

I feel like there is an external oil plug I'm missing.

It seems to leave about a 2 inch diameter spot after a 10 mile drive.

I'm sure Im missing something but I have had zero luck even slowing it down.

Oh and the oil seems to gather in the #4 plug hole, between the 3 and 4 exhaust bumps.

Its driving me nuts I sure wish I knew what I was doing wrong or missing.

FE Technical Forum / Oil Change-Higher Oil Pressure
« on: June 25, 2018, 05:20:55 PM »
I change the oil in my 433in FE yesterday,on start up leak check I noticed the oil pressure about 5psi higher.
I used a WIX filter for the first time,I usually use a K&N. Today after a complete warm up the pressure is higher ,about the same 5psi even at idle.
Is the filter restrictive and causing the pressure to indicate higher?
The other oddity was the water temp also running hotter,I have had stability at 215 at idle at 100*f air temp, today it went to 222*f. BTW that is AC on. With that I wonder if oil FLOW is suffering?

Last Friday it was just as hot, same drive, same long lights only the oil filter, with new oil was changed.
