FE Technical Forum / Re: 427 cylinder walls
« on: August 02, 2012, 04:18:04 PM »
Particularly because of the value of the block, it makes no sense to haul out the boring bar without a thorough sonic testing session. All original FE blocks were made after FoMoCo went to a 'thin-wall' approach to the casting process. Boring by 3/16ths or more, common with the flatheads, simply doesn't work with later iron.

As a general rule, 30 thousandths is OK with an 'as-produced' FE block, but the only way to tell for sure is to do a sonic test. And be sure the guy doing the test knows what he's doing.

FE Technical Forum / Re: C2SE-B Heads on a 427
« on: July 29, 2012, 07:36:09 PM »
When the first Sidewinders came out of the Specialty Foundry, made up for (among other things) the just-released CJ Mustangs, we (John Corrunker and I) arranged to get one for a try-out. I was the designated engine 'grunt' for John's one-of-the first-ten-CJs. Jack Roush and Al Buckmaster came past Corban Transmissions late one evening and dropped one off. The problem was that those first castings were supposed to fit the MR and to make one fit on CJ heads it was necessary to weld extra material at the bottom of the runners at the head interface. And since we were going to use it on a SS/EA car, the completely open plenum was said to need a fore-'n'-aft divider.

After the basic welding was done, the manifold simply set on a shelf in the back room for a number of months. When I put the 427 CO engine in my '67 XR7GT, I 'liberated' the manifold and finished the work. It had been milled to make the fill-in work at the runners flat, but each runner required some material removal to make the openings match the heads.

The divider was flat on top and about a quarter-inch thick. That's what Buckmaster recommended, and I simply left it alone.

The Cougar was drivable enough to take to Northern Michigan for weekend trips and I found it possible to eat the lunch of all the street Hemi cars I ever encountered. Those were the days!!

Added to clarify---I should have said that the plenum divider was suggested to make the engine work better with a C-6. The manifold, with a completely open  plenum, was intended for stick cars.

I'll also say welcome and please don't feel as if ANY question is too basic to ask here. At the very least, it'll bring back memories for some of us. My first new car was a '64 Custom with a 427 and I've been asking questions ever since. This is a friendly group of guys!

Several years ago, my crewchief Tom Caimotto arranged to do some plaques for Brother Lon's Mustang. These were done by color-anodizing the plaques and then ball-milling the emblems into them. If anyone is interested in such a thing, the company that did the work very likely still has the programs. I can check if you PM me or otherwise signify!

Certainly looks neat when the work is done. I have, on occasion, taken my MIG and made several weld spots spaced around the circumference of a pipe before pushing it into a piece of hose. With a clamp behind the weld spots there seems to be enough 'grip' to keep the cold-side hose from separating.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Your jacking safety reminder
« on: July 19, 2012, 10:17:07 AM »
In preparation for a project I went and bought a new set of (inexpensive) jack stands. Didn't need heavy duty---it's only a Mustang Fox---doesn't weigh that much!! Got it jacked up and stands situated. Crawled under and got myself situated. Happened to roll my head to the side while looking at the underside of the car and watched a weld begin to fail on my new jackstand.

Did a lying broadjump out from under the car in approximately one thousandth of a second and then watched the completion of the collapse, leaving about a half-inch of space under the car.

Took the failed jackstand back to Murray's and watched all color leave the face of the manager when I put the mangled jackstand on the counter.

Took my new, gift, best-in-the-house jackstands back home and went back to work on the car.

Moral to the story---for some things the VERY BEST is none too good.

I am reminded of a comment I read of a number of years ago:

FE Technical Forum / Re: unilite dist

The first time I used a Mallory distributor was in the family 1953 Merc flathead. I've never used any other sort of aftermarket diz except a Mallory due to the kindness the guys at the Mallory facility here in Detroit showed to a 16 year-old kid. When the Unilite design came out I started using them and have ever since. Simply pay proper attention to the instructions.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Streetmaster intake on C1AE heads
« on: May 07, 2012, 01:01:01 PM »
Conventional wisdom would certainly suggest that a mismatch AGAINST the direction of flow would cause problems. But I had the experience, several years ago that seemed to show that it isn't always the problem you might think. I had a 460-equipped Town Car that needed to be available and running, and terminal carb difficulties that were being a pain in the neck. A bench-racing session resulted in the removal of the entire factory intake system and the installation of an aftermarket manifold and Holley carb that were otherwise decorating a shelf. The major problem was that the manifold was intended for one of the 'CJ' iterations of the 385-series and there was a decided mismatch---in the 'wrong' direction. Since it logistically made sense, I went ahead anyway.

It worked like a charm---even to the point of providing both a significantly more powerful 'feel' and slightly better mileage. I won't attempt to explain it because it goes against what I otherwise think I know. But it was altogether successful and I ran it for over a year in that configuration.

Hey Jay---

Are you the only skinny guy in the area?

(I get to say stuff like that due to being rather rotund myself!) ;D

Very likely the way to go about things would be to use some of the characteristics Jim Dove has incorporated into his 'Funny Car' engine. The (Cammer) heads have the intake and exhaust runners from KB 'fuelie' heads grafted in and the block doesn't have a cam tunnel.

On an allied note, the Jag aj27 engine in my ECTA car has water jackets that only extend down the cylinder walls about an inch-and-a-half and are solid from there on down. The sleeves are cast in place, and both the head studs and the plethora of studs that come up from the bottom are very long to make use of the entire mass of things to help hold it all together.

When considering how an FE will act under boost, it might be well to consider Pete Robinson and some of the other pioneers who ran Cammers on boost-'n'-pop.

box pick-up truck. This is an (up-dated) rough approximation of the truck that 'Skinny' Fuche ran out of DST. It has MANY miles on it and came from W. Virginia thirty years ago, where it was obviously used for a work-truck. It has a Volare front suspension 'K'-member in it with disc brakes and an Omni R&P as well. It's set-up to take C6 (supplied) or Top-loader and had a 390 in it since the late '80s. Small rust but only patching necessary---no entire panel replacement. Needs floor fixed and associated cab mounts. This truck was running when I pulled it into the garage to do the front suspension. A couple of weekends of work and the installation of your FE engine and it'll be drivable again. Has many hot rod accoutrements. 4.11 9". $4K OBO Call for information or pictures

UPDATE---TRUCK AS IT SETS WITHOUT AFTERMARKET HOT-ROD STUFF---$1500---GOTTA GET IT OUT OF THE WAY---DICKER ON THE HOTROD STUFF.

For those who wonder how Jay gets so much done, and also would like an absolutely hilarious 'read', may I suggest you winkle out a copy of "The Girl, The Gold Watch, And Everything" by John D. McDonald. It'll explain everything! ;D
