FE Technical Forum / Roller cam and lifters for a 410-tow engine?
« on: December 04, 2022, 10:37:46 AM »
Been rethinking about the cam and lifter debacle with flat tappet cams. I been reading about the latest rash of cam and lifter failures and wondering if it would be worth the time and money involved to switch now that I`m getting close to building the engine. I`d like some opinions. This motor will be used to tow and drive daily as well as a work truck. It`s a 64 F 350 flat bed with a Sterling rear and a 5 speed over drive or a C6 tranny. Still working on the Tranny choice, Opinions?

I have to admit that the 427 long tubes will fit into the 56 F100, I own one with them. You have to remove the original rear crossmember that the rear bellhousing sat on and refab a lower crossmember. I also fabbed some side mount engine mounts and a tranny mount crossmember.

That brings up another question, who carries the replacement rod bolts for these now? I have 2 more rod sets that need them.

I`m running 2 motors with the Lemans rods and I seem to remember torquing them to the factory spec. I`m not sure it's been a while.

As I remember I got a set of 3 from my Snap-On guy many yrs. ago They are 1/4" drive.

Some one should get ahold of John V. He had a 61 Star Liner with a cammer that saw street duty alot. He sold it a few yrs ago but I did see it and heard it at Beaver Springs R&R. I know John had some health problems after he fell a few yrs ago. He may remember what it took to make it streetable or has records of its build.

You may be right on the valve covers. If I can find that catalog it may show what was shipped from the factory. Guys changed them to their liking. I know I do!

Most of those were sent to Holman/Moody As they were they were the distributer on the east coast of the hipo parts. Most of the pictures I have seen of the stock pile of engines, all of them were black. Some were I have a H/M catalog that shows John Holman beside a bunch of crate motors and all of them are black. Also remember that there weren't that many TPs made, so it seems reasonable that H/M was made the distributer of them.
