If your looking for a rubber gasket these ones fit and work fine with my chrome OEM style covers.

The cross section area and low RPM port velocity was my initial concern. Jay addressed that (in theory) way back for me. Good to see this topic come up again with more discussion. A 390, 428 or 427 based project is still up in the air for me. Depends on what the actual power is vs. available engine blocks/strength.

Another point is to recall that the cross ram intake is under development as well. Generally these have the butterflies lower which reduces the relative air volume on the vacuum side i.e. valve to butterfly. Another bonus for throttle response and and low RPM manners. Should complement the heads well. Again in theory.

Thanks for the update. I've waited months for interior parts for the Cougar. Gave me extra time to research and refine other aspects of the restoration. Guess you've been staging as much as possible during the wait.

Many 427 cobra actually came with a 428. Believe it was Shelby who said you could not tell the difference until you got over 80 mph.

Most 68 Cougar GTE came with a 427 rated at 390 hp. Later it was replaced with a 428 CJ. CJ had same heads, bigger carb, better exh. Manifolds, and intake. Rated at 335 hp.  Really was faster than the 427. Ford was going to go with the 427, but the 428cj won out as it was cheaper.

427 was the basis of Fords race program. 428 just a hopped up street engine. Today all you need is a 390 stroked to 445ci tfs heads and a hydraulic roller easy reliable 500 hp. Street engine.

And I am building a 427... Because it is a 427 even knowing all need is a 390 stroker. So short answer to original question Ford answered that in 1968 when it ditched the 427 for the 428cj. It all comes down to application.
Agreed. While I can't back up what Shelby may or may not have said the 427 platform was not as cost effective. It could have been overall molding yield or perhaps the post cast milling operations that I've read about. Either way the GTE 427 Cougar is rare. I couldn't afford one if they dredged it out of a river bed.

Here's a nice clip that gets into some of the nitty gritty about bore vs stroke. Kind of a tangent but.... A different perspective on things too. Generalization are sometimes the pitfall of a project but I totally get how those old wives tales make there way into shop talk.

Well, I'm basically the "dumb blond" around here but there is a valve aspect to all of this for some. I believe Aluminum blocks use to cost substantial more than it's iron counterparts. That cost delta seems to have moderated over the years for the popular engine platforms. But if a substantial premium did exist AND the aluminum engine underperformed on the Dyno/street...it could explain why the topic gets debated so thoroughly from time to time.

Thanks for the confirmation and suggestions. As suspected - This pan of mine has some history. Probably as you describe, it was crushed upward and repair attempted.  It was about 1/4" up in the worst spots. Totally obvious with a straight edge but not severe enough to draw major attention to itself. At least not to my eyes. I noticed the scratches on the edges but didn't get alarmed until seeing the insides.

I was able to reclaim that 1/4" and the local auto parts store had the correct filter screen in stock. New pan gasket is also more than twice as thick as original. Should have plenty of clearance now. Also flattened the gasket surface. Took the pan bolts up to 6 ft-lbs. (About half the OEM Spec.) Any more seems to much. Performed the refill procedure per the manual. No leaks thus far. Around 8 to 10 quarts is when I could feel the trans engage gears. Will take it for a gentle drive tomorrow and bring the fluid level to the full mark when completely warmed up.

UPDATE 8/8/20 - The Moroso reusable gasket combine with my old pan was horrible. The old pan is a softer metal and the bolts (no washers) started to pull through and basically ripped the gasket to shreds. Major leaks etc.... Tightening just made it worse. I pulled the pan and used a thin rubber gasket that came with the filter. I flattened the lip of the pan and used Gasgacinch on the pan-to-gasket surface. Transmission to gasket was dry. Was able to add washers to the bolts with the thin gasket. No leaks now thankfully.

Thank you Kevin for the very definitive reply. Here's my pan showing the beveled corners. So I need to go out and get the matching filter. Inside the pan was a magnet but also this odd kiss mark or witness mark that made me question everything. I am using the Moroso reusable pan gasket. Came in real handy today.

FE Technical Forum / C6 Transmission Filter Compatibility
« on: June 04, 2020, 09:31:29 PM »
Hi All - Need some support on C6 transmission filter variations between 2WD and 4WD. About a year ago I bought this Mercury and was told it had a “new” transmission.  I think I found a 4WD filter jammed into a 2WD trans/pan? Trans was quirky from day 1. It was overfilled with fluid when I bought it. I figured they knew something I didn't... Now I think it was restricting flow, possible cavitation on a normal (shallow) pan. Took forever to switch from Park to Reverse or Park to Drive. Recently the fluid smelled burnt so I decided to change it.  This seems to be a 4WD filter from a late model C6. 1975-1996. From some quick searches it would seem I have a 2WD version of the C6 as my speedometer cable is connected normally.  Think I read that 4WD versions have the speedometer cable in the transfer case. It's a D servo with an aluminum tail shaft. Pan looks stock. Everything is bolted up but I have not added any fluid. Didn't want to waist any if I have to pull the pan again.

The old filter has some suspicious dents and deformation on the pick-up side. I don't have a picture (yet) but I did notice an outline similar to the shape of the pickup on the bottom of the pan. Almost like a kiss-mark.

The filter I have looks different but bolts up fine. As the whole valve body is submerged in fluid I think this is correct. Need to bounce it off some folks that have seen a few of these though. I took a picture showing the drain plug on the torque converter but the valve body is in the background. Plug was in this position when I pulled the cover so everything was going well until I stared questioning the filter.

Any brand new block is of interest to me. Has anyone considered a group buy with one of the 427 block providers? Say an order was put in for 15 iron and 15 aluminum 427 blocks. Any deal to be had? Personally I'm  interested in an iron block as I am most concerned about strength and longevity. I won't be using the motor in a competitive environment. However that is just my perspective. Maybe there's an opportunity here?

Well I hope you guys are right as that would be good news. I'd like to keep this engine running as long as possible until I get a more stout replacement prepared. Thanks for the belt removal suggestion.

FE Technical Forum / Engine rattle help.
« on: June 01, 2020, 05:09:25 PM »
Hi - Got this Cougar about 1 year ago. Mechanically it was neglected by the previous owner for the most part. There is a periodic rattle I discovered recently. Can anyone pinpoint what is the most likely culprit? In the video the new rattle or tick in most easy to hear at about the 10 second mark.  Afterwards some wind noise starts to drown it out. Can be heard from the front but most noticeable on the drivers side. I put a long screwdriver to my ear and probed the valve cover, distributor, intake and timing cover but couldn't isolate it. The engine is very cold blooded and the compression is down. I should note that the compression that that I did was with the engine ice cold.  I know that's not technically correct but I wanted the data for future reference. I don't have any documentation on this engine. As my handwriting is terrible - The number in ( ) next to the PSI is the number of compression strokes needed to get to a maximum. I was told i was a .030" or .040" over rebuild with an RV cam. It has a Performer RPM intake. The PO was using 10W-40 Castrol conventional oil. The zinc was 800ppm. Not super low but not exactly enough for the flat tappet lifters that I suspect are inside. I use the same type of oil but add a ZDDP additive. When I did the first oil & filter change I opened up the filter. I could see obvious signed of metal flakes.  A few flakes were the size of coarse sand. I didn't take pictures but did have the oil analyzed. The age of that oil was unknown.

FE Technical Forum / Re: flex fans

How the aftermarket fan aligns with the shroud has to have a big effect also. This assumes you are running with a shroud. So the spacer/clutch depth needed to be considered. (As well as rotating direction. ;))

As an aside I just put back a factor 7 blade fan and Thermo clutch. It replaced an autoparts store plastic fan. Not a flex fan in the true sense. Cars not been out on a hot day yet but I could immediately tell the engine had less vibrations. The old fan was just a low quality item.

Great to see things are coming along. I am waiting on car parts too but for the interior rather then engine. So I understand the pain of waiting. Good luck with the build and test!
