Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Cougar steering wheel
« on: August 16, 2023, 08:38:20 PM »
Well I think it is cool that you picked up a Cougar. It's a bummer that it's not in as good of shape and you hoped. Yes all the 68's Standard or XR7 should have the same (non-67) steering wheel. Most likely it was swapped out. Very un-likely but technically possible that the whole column was changed to a 67 version. 68 columns are just fine but do have a two-piece rod design that allows it to collapse during an accident. This is another source of steering wheel slop (lost motion). However, all the other components like the box, pitman arm etc... need to be inspected first.

+1 for WCCC. They have great YT videos that explain a lot about these cars.

As part of the vacuum hose checks where you able to disconnect or isolate any automatic transmission or power brake (if equipped) lines? Sometimes they are hard-line vs rubber.

The breather check is great tip!

I'd just like to thank everyone for sharing accurate details and being thorough. Over the years this site in particular has helped me tremendously to search out real deal good parts without any of the "drama".

Cheers!

Why not go over those threads a second time and get the depth you think is ideal? Use plenty of oil so as not to chew up the existing thread chase. I have always marked my various bits, taps etc. when I have a specific depth in mind.

Looks like a very nice holiday. Reminds me of my father's days in the Arctic Circle. The so coveted summer!

As far as materials, Cunifer (NiCop) as referenced above is the easiest to bend and flare.  You can buy the tubing and the fittings on Amazon.  You can also get steel line.  The fittings are the same.  As far as the bending and flare tool, I use Rigid.  There are other quality tools for working with steel line (or cunifer) so when shopping, make sure you read the description to ensure it will flare steel.  And watch some videos on how to do a proper double flare.  Cutting, cleaning, positioning, and pressing the flare all need to be done properly.
Thanks for the information. I have a "Mastercool" flare kit that's got good reviews. The CuNiFer material sounds like a really great option. For extreme situations (w/o power brakes) the hardest line option (SS) would give you stiffer peddle feel. My application is a street car. So the low corrosion and easy bending is a win, win.

Interesting pointers. Not trying to alter the subject but where are some good places to pick up the materials? I am looking to redo a fuel line as well as some brake lines.

I upgraded to Moser 31 spline axles and the POWERTRAX® Grip Pro. This is another spiral lock gear system. Great road manners and no complaints. Mine is a pure street car however. I guess a question is do you need the axle upgrade and could you put those funds to better use on a quality center section?

Very cool project and I'm glad you are back to health. I'd keep it as stock as possible externally. You just don't see many split windows that are mostly complete any more. Looking forward to following this one. 👍

Back/neck pain can be difficult to treat and there are so many option. Some work and some are BS. I understand the frustration of multiple treatment, snake oil salesmen, protocols etc...

I have a bulged disc in my neck from being in a mosh pit at Ozzfest. Caught up with me decades layer. My goal was to feel better and avoid surgery and shots. So went with a NUCCA chiropractor. Concept is setting up the body to heal itself. Sounds similar to Brent's solution. Just have to find the treatment that works for you. Good luck.

FE Technical Forum / Re: How much overbore on D4TE block?
« on: January 09, 2023, 02:17:41 PM »
I had a really nice one that had been bored .080 I had it sonic tested the thinnest cylinder was .167 .I sold it to a racer and he ran it several years in a low six second mustang with no issues .Sonic test is your friend.Doug

Some shops around my area got away from doing sonic checks. "No money in it." Had to really search out an old school machinist from Aurora, IL. My .030” over D3TE is around .195” on the thrust sides. Thinnest was .145 low down on the non thrust area. Block is going 0.040" over so will thin accordingly. Using a girdle fitted by Jay Brown himself. Should be plenty strong for a stout street car.

Congratulations on becoming sober. Easy to start but hard to stop for some. No posts that I recall being off. The money saved can go towards more car parts. Always a plus.
