I have an "as cast" single Dominator flange t/p unit that's out for powdercoat right now.  Will be running an old L-4575 1050 on it later this year.  Randy M

Are you sure they are "G" heads and not "D"s?  The C3-D head is, I believe, the first 427 head.  Spring cups, steel retainers, 2.02/1.55 etc.  For what it's worth I just had a set of "D"s done and my guy managed the hardened exhaust seat installation ok.  Randy M

TRW L2298 forged "stroker" piston was a standard warehouse item starting in the early-mid '70s.  If you milled the dome off you'd be at about 10:5cr or so.
A cheaper alternative was the OE dished marine piston, which was forged (by TRW) as well.  All that was necessary was to mill .100" off the top "ring" surrounding the dish - presto, a 10:1 stroker piston.  The 2298s used 1/16,1/16/,1/8 rings while the boat pistons used the standard thicker lo-riser rings.  I've still got a set of the boat pistons on the shelf looking for a standard bore block (I know, good luck with that).  Randy M

Now that the subject of oil pump function in newer design engines has come up I'd like to bring up the cover deflection issue experienced by the crank-driven design common today in many brands.  I am amazed that the covers commonly deflect enough during high rpm/demand to allow copious quantities of oil to escape the pressurized system - a Fred Flintstone relief valve?  How could this not have been considered a defect during the design process?  It shakes my confidence in modern design logic.

Here's a link from 2016 on the other forum, wherein I posted pics of my "oddball" straight gear FE pump.  Eventually "Pumpbuilder" Doug weighed in to i.d. it as an early TRW hi-volume effort and it utilized the gears and cover from the Y-block.  Unfortunately the pics are no longer viewable (damned Photobucket).  Randy M

Back in the day TRW had a spur gear replacement pump for the FE.  Some years back I pulled one out of a core engine.  The guys on the other FE forum i.d.'d it as such.  It had a stout cast iron cover on it too.  Randy M

I have to agree with Mr. Craine but only to a point ... in the late '50s - mid '60s you couldn't give flathead stuff away.  In the '60s - '70s it was the Y-block.  In the '80s it was the FE's turn.  They have ALL come back with well-deserved popularity but, in general, the market for ALL of the dinosaurs is going to soften as time goes on (not just Ford).  The next generation is going to "plug in" whether they want to or not.  JMO.  Randy M

Has there ever been any experimenting with push rod passage shapes?

Quite a few T/ports got pushrod tube work.  The main goal at the time was more pushrod clearance for bigger cam grinds, but an oval shape was necessary so as not to further restrict flow.  Randy M

When you didn't have an "Uncle Henry" to do the cool modifications Ken described you had to call your Holman-Moody connection and got the same thing, only with a custom-cast one piece spacer/cover.  Randy M

Greg, unless you have absolute confidence in your upper valve train I'd suggest swapping the assemblies side-to-side to see if the "overoiling" follows the valve train.  If it does you likely have excessive clearance (galling, etc) present somewhere in that assembly.  JMO.  Randy M

Keep in mind that some small input toploaders have the big 31 spline output.  Early 70's with 351C applications comes to mind.  Randy M

I was not aware of that, and have never seen one from the factory that way (not at all saying you're wrong), but given the age and likeliness that things have been worked on over the years, it's wise to always check, because someone could easily change the input shaft.

Yes, lot's of mix-'n-match toploaders out there and one never knows.  I have a small-in, big-out RUG-BG1 on the shelf though, which was spec'd that way by (uncle) Henry.  Randy M

I was told many years ago that the CJ head is, with the exception of it's "dual" exhaust side bolt pattern, an EXACT copy of the last iteration of the lo-riser head (C4AE-H).  Randy M
