Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: I quit drinking
« on: January 11, 2023, 09:52:04 AM »
Congratulations, my friend!  ;D
I've been sober since around 2008 or so after many attempts at quitting. Finally prayed to God to take the desire to drink away, and he answered in a big way.
Have not had thoughts for alcohol at all since.

Good 'ol 460.
I 'm subbed to Fab Rats but I gotta say, their constant jabs and ignorant comments directed at Ford gets old.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 460 Stroker Camshaft Question
« on: October 16, 2022, 07:57:59 AM »
Hey guys. I'm assembling a 532" stroker for my '74 Cougar and was curious if this cam would work decent in this application. If not, why?

Application: Ford big block 385 Series 429-460ci V8.Cam Style: Mechanical flat tappet
Basic Operating RPM Range: 3,600-7,000
Duration at 050 inch Lif 246 int./256 exh.
Advertised Duration: 282 int./292 exh.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.563 int./0.583 exh.
Lobe Separation (degrees): 108
Intake Valve Lash: 0.026 in.
Exhaust Valve Lash: 0.026 in.
Computer-Controlled Compatible: No
Grind Number: F-246/3294-2-8
Valve Springs Required: Yes
Quantity: Sold individually.
Notes: Also fits 370 c.i.d. engines. 10.5 to 12.0 compression ratio advised.

Events @.050 In. 20/46 Ex. 61/15

Build specs.:
Pump gas.
9.7:1 compression.
Factory early D0VE-C heads with full port work and 2.20/1.71 valves. Ported and built by Scott Johnston.
Not sure on intake yet but most likely either a Ford Racing G 429 (Performer RPM) or a Torker II.
950 CFM Holley derivative.
Hooker Super Comp 1 7/8 headers.

C6 transmission. Torque convertor stall not yet determined. Rear gear not determined.
This will be a fun street car. Want a flexible engine, not a high RPM screamer, just a nice, usable performance engine.

I had this very cam in a 466 years ago in a daily driver truck. Probably only 9:1 compression but man, the thing ran great. As I recall, I had advanced it 4 degrees in that application.

Thanks guys!

That's awesome, fryedaddy! Congratulations on getting it back.

I have a similar story regarding a motorcycle; a 1980 Honda CB750F my dad bought new.
Dad sold it to a family friend in 1983. Sadly, my dad passed away at 57 in 1991 and sometime after that I told the family friend if he ever decided to sell the bike, I'd like to buy it back.
Well, in 2009, I saw him in a grocery store, and he asked if I was still interested in the bike, yes! He sold it back to me for, $500.
It had about 2500 miles on it when sold and 29,000 when I got it back. It now has about 32,000.
Will never part with this bike. Even though it was only in my family for a couple years, I have many memories associated with it and my dad. I still miss him dearly. But I know I'll see him again.

I've been following this gentlemans channel for some time. It started as a joke but has morphed into something a little more serious. Pretty fascinating.

Excellent discussion, guys! Another reason I like these FE forums so much.

I'm not exactly sure yet just how far I want to push the envelope of "streetable."
That definition has mellowed a bit since my 30s.  :)

Probably go for a mild performance build, more stomp than stock but not a street-legal drag car.
I don't know if 400 hp would be considered a "mild" Cleveland build but I'd kind of like to shoot for that number, or there abouts.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
Brent, I probably should have, but I'm always drawn to the FE forums for some reason. I'll post over there more as I get into the engine build.

Jay, I would love to run 11:1, especially since that's what the M code Cleveland came with factory in my car, a 1970 Cougar.

4V closed chamber heads. What would you guys recommend to be the highest compression ratio for 91 pump gas? 9.5 or so?
The Cleveland forums seem to be kind of slow so that's why I ask here.
I know some of you guys play with the C as well as the FE.

Thanks.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Fuel Efficient Build---352 or 351W
« on: March 31, 2022, 07:55:34 PM »
Okay guys, another fuel economy question for you regarding a couple engines.
If you had your choice, which engine would be a better candidate for a fuel-efficient build, a 352 or 351 Windsor?
Given the current situation around us now has me thinking more about MPG than HP.
Would still like to have good torque and a throttle responsive engine, only focus more on efficiency.
Factory cylinder heads, pump gas, backed by a C6 in a 4000lb truck. Will be using an aftermarket throttle body EFI system.
I do have one of those overdrive Top Loaders that came in late '70s trucks I could install, if it would be worth the trouble.

As always, any input greatly appreciated.

My best MPG FE is a current truck (F100 Ranger '66) with a stock 352 and a factory Overdrive and 3.25 gearing. Consistent 22 mpg @ 65 MPH
where as a typical 352 with a 3.50 gear or a F250 with 4.10 & taller tire is 10-12 mpg. Factory 2v carb always the best. Tried other 2v's and lost 3 mpg.

Another daily 352 truck that has a added 1961 4v intake and holley and fine tuned with as much timing as I can give it is 14.5 mpg if I drive it nice but now the holley is giving issues so mpg recently dropped under 10.

I have found as typical the manual trans always seems to give better mpg.

For fun of it I wanted to see what I could get out of a 390 with low rpm power and MPG main goals. Started off with a .020 390 block and custom pistons with better ring pack, 9.00 comp, idle to 4000 rpm custom cam and will be running a c-6 with a GV OD and a 3.50 gear set to start off with. I have a few extra 3 spd overdrive (factory type) transmissions I may try. Goal is 18 mpg @ 65 mph. For this one I had Drew do me up a 390 GT Holley and I added 406 manifolds from Kugal. Excited to see where it's at for power and mpg but thinking may not quite get to 300 hp but should make incredible tq.

Truck I drive the most I did a 2020 Raptor Crate engine and a 10spd auto with a 3.50 gear but switching to a 3.0. It gets 25 mpg @ 65 on 91 and 20 mpg on E50 while making over 600 hp to tire and 658 tq to tire. If I get too happy with throttle it drops to 17.

The factory 3 spd manual OD trans are a great deal for mpg. I have found the GV OD is also a great improvement.

Did one 351w and was not impressed with mpg or power.

Sound funny to say FE and MPG in same sentence but the stock 352 with a tall gear and od shocked me as to what was avail from factory 56 yrs ago.
Good information, thank you.
That first 352 is indeed impressive. On the second 352 truck, what transmission and rear gear were you running?

On the 351 Windsor, you're not the first person I've heard who says it doesn't get good mileage. They come with some pretty poor cylinder heads designed for the 302, and they are even stifling for that engine.
I wonder if it's a case that the heads just don't flow and consequently, you need to lay into the throttle more to get it to do what you want. Or maybe most of them found their way into F-250s and were just overwhelmed with tonnage?

Since the deal with the Explorer didn't materialize, you have me taking a look at the 352 again.  :)

Hey thanks guys, I appreciate the replies.
I actually found what I needed brand new, If you can believe that. Modern Driveline makes a pedal for my car that mounts to the factory auto pedal assembly. You just have to trim the brake pedal a bit.
On ebay, there's a company selling all the parts from between the pedal and the clutch arm. Says it's for the 351 Cleveland but I'm confident I can make it work for the 460.
I already have a Toploader with Hurst linkage and a couple bell housings, that may be from a 351M/400 for all I know.
Ordered the pedal today but I'm holding off on the other stuff as I may look into a hydraulic clutch conversion.
