Some of the few FE's at SEMA
This 64 Galaxie has an FE.

526" Shelby block...

Chip Foose's 56 F100 sat outside with no sign... never saw the hood opened but Roush stroker FE in there.

Not sure if this was or not.

FE Technical Forum / smaller 3/8" umbrella seals ?
« on: October 15, 2021, 05:36:33 PM »
I am putting  a pair of FE heads together and the springs are doubles... and won't fit the normal umbrella seals. Guides are too big for PC seals. Pretty sure i've heard of smaller 3/8" umbrella seals. Anyone know an applicaion or part number?

Bret Kepner just sent me this "I just wanted to make sure you knew about Sol Stewart's passing on Sunday, April 18, 2021."

I am saddened. He was a wealth of information on early days racing in the southeast amd seemed like a great fellow that i unfortunately never met.

FE Technical Forum / really long rod stroker 427
« on: February 04, 2021, 07:54:38 PM »
I am trying to use up some of the parts i've got hanging around. So today i just picked up the crank from the machine shop. I had a 390 crank that spun a bearing. I figured some day i'd use it in a 390 with the 351M rods and 410 pistons but have a set of 4.28 bore pistons with a 1.14" compression distance and a 64 top oiler block bored to fit them. Hmmm. So i calculated it out. A 7.1" long rod is the longest normally available and with a 2.20" journal there should be plenty of space to offset that crank to a 3.84" stroke and make a zero deck with those pistons. I could have used a longer stroke but then rods would be a custom size. This saves an otherwise useless crank and pistons.

I thought there wasn't information on anything pre 67 like this. On this Bring a Trailer auction for an R code 63 Galaxie convertible there is a 1972 letter from Ford where they state 411 convertibles in 1963 with the 427 engine and 204 convertibles in 1964. Click on picture #202 of the 222 pictures.

So what other info does Ford have on cars we can't get Marti reports for?

FE Technical Forum / Weird 390 wrist pin issue
« on: November 16, 2020, 02:45:21 AM »
I found a 390 in the back of my garage that i never knew i had. I pulled it apart and found a couple of issues.
On one piston the one snap ring was broken in half. Never found the other half but the snap ring groove is fairly chewed up, the rod bushing is worn away to nothing on one edge, fairly evenly all the way around and the still intact end of the bushing hangs out past the rod. The piston looks fine, no scrapes on that cylinder either.

What could cause that?

The other issue is the crank end thrust is almost 1/4". Crank has such a deep groove in the back of the journal you could almost fit another thrust bearing in place. I would guess a torque convertor not into the second set of splines. The engine appears to be very low miles, D4TE block and standard bore and bearing sizes with hardly any wear, very clean inside too. No obvious grit from that worn crank thrust surface.

FE Technical Forum / 67 Custom R code
« on: October 05, 2020, 12:01:43 PM »
A guy called me looking for engine parts for his 67 Custom R code two door sedan.

I was thinking the full sized cars might use the tall plain pentroof valve covers since there is no power brake booster in the way like in Fairlanes. Or would all 67's use the same Power by Ford chromed ones as a 390GT or 427 Fairlane?

About 25 years ago i heard of this car from the original owner who told the story of wanting a 427 Fairlane like the 66 he saw at the local track. He went to order one but 66 production was finished and there was not going to be a 427 available in the 67 Fairlane. So he ordered the lightest car he could get the engine in. By the time it arrived the 427 Fairlane had been announced. Apparently the 427 was pulled from the car way back then.

FE Technical Forum / Did we all see this 482 build?
« on: August 21, 2020, 02:57:27 PM »
Someone must have spent an awful lot of money to get 501hp! A high falutin' Shelby block with a pretty small solid roller cam and stock Edlebrock heads. And peters out at an RPM that diesels go to nowadays.
I suppose in a lightweight car this would have a bunch of power but it sure seems to not use much of it's potential.
