Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: 58 Mercury Wagon on Bring A Trailer
« on: March 25, 2024, 10:23:04 PM »
The Montego already had the Cyclone dash and buckets installed when I purchased the car, but I converted it to a manual and added the console. Aside from a reproduction front spoiler, everything else was FoMoCo, including the Magnum 500 wheels. I had wanted to complete a Cyclone wagon, and had located a hood, but its condition was a little rough and I couldn't justify removing the original one as it was just so clean and original (except for the added FoMoCo hood scoop, from a Cougar I believe). Of course finishing out the Cyclone look was going to be stupid pricey--a nice grille and headlamp assy was going to be difficult, if not impossible, to locate.

...I do regret selling it.

Oh for sure on the prices of grille pieces!  Is that the car Evan Smith has now?

I have a new old stock set of Mickey Thompson aluminum FE rods from 1965 and they use Allen heads like that.

Good news. I want to go.  As Rory mentioned we were at the 2018 event and it was great. Amazing compared to what we see out west. It was also quite something to see that much FE stuff at a swap meet, like the total of all the FE stuff at 40 or more swap meets i'd been to for ten years all in one place. And some really cool and historic cars. I never knew Ford made Petty Blue 69 Torinos. Getting to meet lots of people on this site was great. Having Ohio George across the table from me at dinner was priceless.

Yes, notices that and it makes me wonder when the picture was taken that they have a Boss 429 by then?

Wow, $4200 for that "390 or 427"... that's possibly a very expensive 390 core.

A lot of stuff went for big money. $36,000 for that 1909 Model T, that's a bunch.
 $150,000 for that Pantera!

The CruiseAire and Executive Cruiser seemed like bargains by comparison.
Guy had some cool stuff. the 57 Ford with the Coyote 5.0 looked worthwhile, that 55 TBird VIN is pretty early, the white 63 Galaxie project is a P code.

2065 Merc 427's are so elusive i'm not sure there even is one left to check.  I wonder if it is not an open element but sure big round of oval enclosure with a snorkel and heat riser?

There are three/four of them, the second was in the early 80's and had a DOHC indy engine and was later changed to make a Supervan3 and they now have an electric one...

Seems a lot of them think they are converting the car to an independent front suspension. As if it wasn't already. Because the kits for 1948 and earlier Fords say that. But then these people are sometimes in charge of the rules like at a circle track a local guy raced at. They would not allow any Ford engines except a Y-Block because "no angle plug heads"

I will say those old MT covers are made out of junk metal I had to weld a small crack inside of mine and it was not fun.

The ones that came black crinkle are made with pot metal and the polished ones were pure aluminum and weldable.

I ruined a few cut up ones making mine before I realized that.

Lesson is to not let Chevy guys work on Fords. They know diddly squat about them and screw them up. One local yahoo is a diehard Chevy guy but wanted a Cobra kit car... and it had to be "correct" with a 427 Ford. So of course he had starter problems, never solved despite spending thousands on different fancy starters and flywheels and shims, never even knew they made ones for Fords but they do, a ring with the bolt holes. So then finally, after a year he calls me and asks what the flat plate is for on the new thousand dollar Quicktime bellhousing "My Lakewood never had that".

It pretty much like Cyclone listings. Those fits-all 302, "64-77 Ranchero"... that is several distinct chassis styles there. Hardly any headers fit a 65 and earlier Falcon unless they are specifically designed for them. 65 Mustang headers won't.

I hate Mustang II suspension for the very problems he shows. Rack site way up high. I saw one at the SEMA show, FE 63 Galaxie with a single stage external oil pump , pan was shallow at the front. I have also seen a dry sump on a pretty stock 302 with exhaust manifolds... all to give more spark plug room.
So his solution is going to mean the whole tunnel and tranny crossmember needs to move rearward, the air clearer runs into the bracing at the back of the hood and protrudes out the front of the scoop unless the scoop is moved to the back edge. Power brake booster won't fit any more,  steering shaft may foul the oil filter too.
