FE Technical Forum / 390 block bored .080 over would hard block help?
« on: March 10, 2019, 06:17:01 PM »
Was looking at an early 70's 390 block that was bored to standard 428 size as the owner bought into the myth that it was same as a 428 service block because it has external ribs and passed the drill bit test.

So block had a lot of machine work done and cracked a cylinder.  Clearly I'd never start with a 390 block to make a 428, but can get it cheap and was wondering if a sleeve and a 1/2 fill of hard block would work for a basically street deal. Thanks, Steve

Clutch friction material failure always is a result of too much slippage which causes them to heat up them the friction material fails. Only exception is if they are submerged in water.

Now is possible the unit was not built to handle the power of a blown 427 meaning there was not enough holding pressure (line pressure) and enough surface area (number of clutch plates) to keep from slipping, but the failure was not because the clutches sat around for years unless of course it was in a lake.  ::)

Unless the transmission was submerged in water only reason for clutch plates failing is if they slip and that is what did in the clutches in the example above. If you don't have enough line pressure or the seals are leaking they will slip.

If it was mine I'd pull the valve body and make sure all the valves move freely. I'd also visually inspect that there is no rust in the pan, etc. Transmission fluid tends to suck up water so if it was stored in a damp area could have some corrosion.

As for clutch material the original ford clutches needed the type f fluid to help with the static holding capacity. Clutch material has improved a lot and on stuff since at least the nineties can run better fluid. That trick shift fluid is just dyed type f is all marketing hype. A good full synthetic be light years better today.

For shipping UPS was cheaper than Fedex. Would be $77 to ship so total would be $327.
I can do paypal. Depending how you send the money there can be a charge 3% of total. If you send as family & friend and fund from PayPal or a bank account is no charge otherwise figure adding 3% total on top.  OK let me know if you want to go ahead.

Thanks, give me a day or two and I will get a number on the shipping. BTW just be clear I bought these a year ago from a guy who bought them new for his 67 Mustang but decided against them because of the low ground clearance. Since then I good a deal on some coated 6114 hookers so don't need these. From what I can see these are correct for a mustang/cougar but never installed them so I am going off of what I was told. Shipping would be whatever the actual cost is, but will have to nail that down. FedEx ground likely be cheapest. Will have find a box and weight it. What is your zip code and is it residential or commercial? Give me a day or two and I will figure out the shipping. Thanks Steve

Hi, here are some pictures. Sorry not the best of quality, but can see what they are. The primary tube measure 2" od. The collectors are 3-1/2" and slip on.

I have a set of mad dog headers. Are new, painted black,  just been sitting. Fit 67-70 mustang/cougar. They have the 428cj flange, are 2" tubes, and the the front two tubes on each side go under the lower a arms. I'd take $250 plus shipping. I am in San Antonio, TX. If interested can send you some pictures.
Thanks, Steve

FE Technical Forum / BT 2 x 4 intake better than MR?
« on: January 09, 2019, 02:10:52 AM »
Are some new BT MR 2x4 intakes on ebay. The one seller claims that the BT intake has over time been improved over the original ford version and worth 50 to 70hp. Am assuming over the original, but maybe means over a 2bbl intake :P
Just was wondering if any truth to the newer intakes being better.

To allow a smoother transition of the intake port to the head. Was suppose to have benefit mainly on a cold start to help keep the fuel from separating from the air or so the story goes...

What he has there worth about $400. DOVE-A only better than any other block if you want to add 4 bolt mains as it is easier to do. Heads you have $1k in them by time get good valves, springs, good valve job, hardened exhaust seats, etc... crank worth scrap. Cheaper get a 460 as a lot more 460 pistons theses days.

I'll be heading to the local pick-a-part next weekend to look at the Explorer rear disk brakes. According to Google searches, they will fit on the small bearing housings by elongating the holes.

Edit for gear ratio

The rear discs from a 92 and up crown victory or grand marquis same as the explorer, but uses the small bolt pattern. You may need a spacer ring for the bearing. Are a few places that sell them.
