Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Interesting 67 Shelby gt350 drag car
« on: January 13, 2022, 11:02:11 AM »
The car has been discussed over on the SAAC site. There is NO way anyone "at this point" can positively say which car it is. ALL of the vin numbers "were" on the front end that was cut off. Despite MANY people trying to help , there is simply no way to know. 1444 is a GUESS at best because of information from the SAAC registry. The car by their own account was NEVER finished OR raced so how can it be significant??
One BIG problem with all of the publicity is NOW if the front end is replaced AND there are VIN numbers on it , SOMEONE is going to jail for "vin tampering"

This has nothing to do with the crush sleeve as the diff has a solid spacer because of the Daytona retainer. It more likely that the traction lock case cover has broken. This is very common on traction lock units. So much so that billet steel replacement covers are available for repair. "I" would pull the diff and look for the issue . It won't go away.

Great advice. The spacer deal has bit more than one person!

That is a nice "early" ( 1st week of Oct '69)carb. As Greg will said , yes that is stock jetting . You will "probably need to go to  69 pri and 82 secondary on the Streetmaster intake. I suggest you "try" the carb as is ( with the drilled butterflies) this allows the butterflies to be closed more and helps the idle circuit function better. If the idle speed won't go low enough "then" I would change them out.

Thanks Frank! Yes THAT is the actual "blueprint" . My book is a log book of the sequential SK numbers used and usually the reason for the change. It is interesting that Joe B called out the carbon content correct on the blueprint but put the decimal point in the wrong place on the book notation. That is something Dennis K caught when I posted the information.
The point of my post was simply to show what "I" found while looking through my book. Nowhere in the book for any engine type was there a call out for ''nickle" as an element used. The words "high nickle" have forever been associated with Ford blocks and it certainly appears to be mythical. There were a couple of listings for the Magnesium 494 blocks and the associated sleeves used.

According to the SK log book notations some were cast using "ACB material" and there is one call out for ".410 carbon equivalent , max .25 chromium 187-241 Brinell ( hardness) .100 min bore wall thickness" . Plus there were two with aluminum as the block material ( for Can Am use.  This is why I said ''special alloy"  , NOT high nickle as there is no mention anywhere in my book of nickle. This is in line with others who have always said Ford did not make  "high nickle" blocks.

Last night I was looking at my log book of sequential "SK" numbers used by Ford EEE engineers to create special race oriented parts. Lo and behold I find about 7 that reference 427 blocks and specific materials to be used to make them. The first three specify ACB iron to be used , and the next four list the elements and specific percentages to be used. Unfortunately I left the book at home so I can't immediately post the SK numbers AND dates "today" and the info will have to wait until I return on Monday Jan 3.
Several have referred to "mythical" high nickle  blocks and it does appear that they WERE made. "I" know funny car racer Tommy Grove had them in '68 and they were the reason he continued to run the Cammer into '72 , even in the Barry Setzer VEGA funny car!!!!!

That is precision "grinding" at it's best. Keep adding sandpaper until you get the size you want.

Jim with repeated launches , the housing does  bend causing a "toe in" situation and potential "tire scrub". I would add one in your case. To do it right , the brace is fit an welded before the housing is straightened so that the welding removes some ( or all) of the toe in. It is then checked and corrected as needed. I've seen .003-.005 improvements in the 60' times and nearly a mph on the big end.

   Thanks Barry ,
I always enjoy yo stopping by. I'll get that part we talked about on the way to you this week glad you can use it. Several other FE fanatics came by and some were surprised to see we have parts for them too.

'67 for the lip seals. The one you have should have a C7AE part number on it. The 427 SOHC actually used an orange silicone lip seal in '65 and Ford serviced it in their complete engine gasket sets. I have owned several of the gasket sets.

+1 on that! I'm sorry I didn't get by to see you Jay. THANK YOU  for stopping by to see me at my booth. I was only able to get out before the show started , not while it was going on. Despite fewer people I was swamped with people wanting to talk to me.
