FE Technical Forum / Re: Almost there !

FE's in a 55/56 Ford was a common swap way back when. From what I recall you could use the original clutch linkage from the car. Problem was it didn't line up from the frame bracket to the engine bracket. Two ways to make it work. One was to cut and reweld the zbar so it lined up. The other was to turn the yblock engine mounts backwards. Epay and craigslist are the places I look when I'm looking for things like that. Found some 63 Ford clutch linkage I used on my 61 on Epay.

No sir, not a bit. I remember driving 50 miles to work in that kind of weather. Now if it gets below 65 I get cold.

You can only see the top half of the springs in the picture. Are the ones that look "normal" have the close coils on the bottom? If they are the ones in the picture with the close coil at the top are on upside down. My old man showed me that 40yrs ago. Ford made springs like that. Close coil went towards the head. If the normal springs don't have the close coils then yes there's a major problem there.

Isn't it illegal for anything but an emergency vehicle to have blue flashing lights?

Probably had a 534 in it. Member of the 401/477/534 family. Great truck truck engine that would outpull just about anything. Drank a lot of fuel though like you mentioned.

From what I've read the cast iron rings will seat faster but the moly rings will last longer.

FE Technical Forum / Cam selection pt2
« on: January 24, 2017, 11:25:04 AM »
Keep looking at different cams and I think I'm going to go with the CompCam 270S. 406, flat top pistons, c2se heads, 3x2s with cast iron headers, toploader & 3:50 gear.

Adv duration.       Duration @ 50.      Lobe sep.      lift
     270                         224.                   110.         .540

That is until I ran across the cam card on the cam in my yblock.

Adv.  duration.      Duration @50.          Lobe sep.      lift
      264/268.               234/238.                 110.          .528/.536

How would this run in the FE. Any advantages or drawbacks. Worth the expense.

This car sounds good and runs good with this cam. Car is a 57 Ford 292 domed pistons, ported and shaved heads, 3x2s with header type ex. manifolds 5sp & 3:50 rear end.
Any opinions.  Thanks Dan

FE Technical Forum / Re: Converter knocking? Flexplate/starter connection
« on: January 19, 2017, 07:36:41 AM »
Two things come to mind regarding the convertor knock if that's what it is. One, the 4 nuts that secure the convertor to the flexplate sometimes get loose and that could cause it to knock. And two, sometime the flexplate will crack where it bolts to the crankshaft.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Another cam choice
« on: January 17, 2017, 09:43:12 AM »
Thanks for the replies. Eric thanks for the video, sounds good. Wonder how it will perform with a mostly stock exhaust.
I admit to being a dinosaur on some of this. Back in the 60's you didn't have a lot of choices and I believe the specs were figured differently on cams. Figured out some of the specs on cams but still not up to speed on all of it. Like I mentioned before I was going to run the Crane factory grind C3AZ-AA cam until I saw the 114 lobe separation put the power way up in rpms. The 270S (I'm running solids) that Brent recommended seems to be the closest with a tighter lobe sep. That said would the 282S be too big.
Adv. duration.      Duration@50.     Lobe sep.        lift
                  282.                    236.                110.           .571

I'm thinking the lift is getting a bit too much for my needs. I assume the vacuum would suffer also.
Any thoughts or other suggestions.
Thanks, Dan

FE Technical Forum / Another cam choice
« on: January 16, 2017, 10:19:53 AM »
Another one of those "help me choose a cam" posts. Car is a 61 Starliner 406, 3x2s, toploader 4sp., ps & pb & either a 3.00 or 3.50 gear. Ignition is a stock dual point dist. Probably going with 225/70 14 tires. A little more detail, it has flat top pistons (going for .005 in the hole deck) C2SE heads, shorty cast iron manifolds running thru a mostly stock (probably go bigger on the pipes) exhaust. Everything is at the shop now getting machined and balanced. I was gonna go with the Crane factory type grind until I read the 114 lobe separation put the power at the upper rpm limit. Just using the car for shows and cruises I'll never get there. Here's some cams I've looked at.
Adv. duration.  Duration @ 50.   Lobe sep.      lift

Crane C3AZ-AA.               284.                  244.                114.           .524

CompCam 33-244-4.        270.                  224.                110.           .540

Howard 252342-10.          265.                  230.                110.          .560

Lunati 30330511.            272/282.           236/238.           112.          .569/.580

Lunati 30330508.            290/300.           241/251.           108.          .525

Not a fan of dual pattern cams but I put a couple in anyway. Would any of these cams be a good choice or do you have any suggestions. Just looking for that good FE "thrash" without a radical lope.
Thanks, Dan

FE Technical Forum / Re: What are these pedals from?
« on: January 16, 2017, 08:36:13 AM »
Can't go wrong either way. Use em on that 57 or hang on to them. People are always looking for pedals for them. Might make a tidy profit to spend on future projects.

Hahaha. I've done all that before. Better safe than sorry. Was going on a trip on my Harley Dyna years ago and when changing the oil the drain plug just didn't tighten up right. After screwing with it a while I bought a new pan for it.

Should take a couple 5/16-18 bolts about 1/2in long.

I've seen worse repaired. FWIW, when I used to come across a stripped drain plug instead of going oversize I would braze a fine thread 7/16 nut to the pan and just use a 7/16 bolt for the plug. Never had to worry about stripping it again.
